OnlineWire Virtual Gig Calendar

Because there are no gigs at music venues during the COVID-19 pandemic, we're continuing to run the WWOZ OnlineWire, a calendar of virtual gigs, in the place of the regular WWOZ Livewire. These are happening on a variety of platforms-- mostly social media. We're sharing links when and where we can. Many musicians are offering digital "tip jars" via Venmo or other payment systems during these sets. Stay in and support some live, local music!

WWOZ on YouTube

We've updated our YouTube channel, which features many hundreds of video performances by New Orleans' favorite musicians, shot and edited by our video team, then thoughtfully arranged in play lists. Subscribe to get notifications when we stream live and post new videos. Lately, the latter has involved editing and bringing to light archived performances, like complete sets by selected 2016 and 2017 Crescent City Blues & BBQ Fest artists.

Know Your NOLA Music History: A Closer Walk

It's a great time to explore A Closer Walk, our interactive New Orleans music history map, which covers over a century of New Orleans’ great musical moments, from Buddy Bolden to Big Freedia. It's a handy guide to exploring New Orleans music history, either via the 22 curated tours, or by exploring "a la carte" any of the 129 individual music history sites that A Closer Walk NOLA catalogs and describes. Read descriptions by acclaimed music writers, see rare archival photos of important music history locales in their heyday, listen to music and oral histories with artists, and watch music videos and interviews.

Jazz Fest Crafts Auction

In an effort to support the visual artists that were scheduled to participate at Jazz Fest 2020, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is holding an online auction to benefit these artists. Each week through June 22, the work of 25 artists will be featured. Items up for bid include gallery-quality fine art and crafts. The auction is a fantastic way to support Jazz Fest artists while also snagging a beautiful work.

Creole Tomato Fest, To Go

The 34th annual Creole Tomato Festival will look different than past years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it's happening Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14. Takeout dining, featuring the delectable creole tomato, will be available from a number of local eateries. And musical acts including Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes, Gina Brown & Anutha Level, Dr. Michael White's Original Liberty Jazz Band, and Stephanie Jordan are scheduled to perform live, streaming, via the French Market's Facebook page.

Shrimp Ceviche

Shrimp "Ceviche.

Recipe: Shrimp "Ceviche"

This is an awesome summer dish, with bright, spicy flavors and cool, crisp textures. It's quick and simple, and since the shrimp gets chopped into pieces, you can use smaller (cheaper) shrimp; sizes in the range of 41-50 or 51-60 are just fine. Because we add so many strong flavors, this recipe turns out great with frozen shrimp too. And for the record, since the shrimp is cooked before marinating, this is not true ceviche, in which acid from citrus "cooks" otherwise raw fish.
