WWOZ Tricentennial Music Moments

What do Pete Fountain, Funky Butt Hall, Danny Barker, and the first-ever Cajun record have in common? They're among the featured subjects in our first batch of Tricentennial Music Moments, a series of on-air and online episodes focusing on the stories and people who've shaped the Crescent City in celebration of New Orleans' 300th Anniversary.

See "Closeup: Tank & the Bangas" Online

"Closeup" is a WWOZ documentary that profiles the New Orleans band Tank & the Bangas as they surge to national prominence. Filmed over the course of a year, during which the group went from playing gigs in their own backyard to playing major festivals, the documentary traces their origin and journey with personal interviews, concert footage, and a rare look into the artistic process at rehearsals and recording sessions.

Baba Geno

Show Host Spotlight: Baba Geno

Baba Geno's first show on WWOZ was "Overnight Jazz" on Wednesdays from 3-6a. He began programming his current show, Spirits of Congo Square, a year before Hurricane Katrina, after Uncle L left. Baba Geno wants to keep the original concept of the show as it was established by its founder, Gabou Mendy. As such, Spirits of Congo Square is a "celebration of African culture through music." Baba Geno is a writer and attorney when he is not on WWOZ. His show airs Sunday night from 8-10p.
