One of the year's happy challenges: looking back at the work of our most awesome volunteer photographers and selecting one hundred (or so) terrific photos from the year's in-studio performances, festivals, parades, pledge drives, and other events. Big thanks to Ryan Hodgson-Rigsbee, Kichea S. Burt, Eli Mergel, Leona Strassberg Steiner, Mark PoKempner, Black Mold, Leon Morris, Kate Gegenheimer, Olivia Greene, Bill Sasser, Ken Maldonado and the other volunteer photographers whose work is represented in this amazing Flickr set.

Our Year in Video

Wild Magnolias

Wild Magnolias on Mardi Gras Day.

During 2016, WWOZ's video department captured live music all over town. You can see all the results on our Vimeo page. And for your end-of-year viewing pleasure, here are sixteen of our favorite videos from this year. They include Tank & the Bangas at Cafe Istanbul, the Wild Magnolias on Mardi Gras, Irma Thomas in our studio, and Henry Butler on Piano Night. Great videos and great memories.

In Memoriam: Carol Solomon and Herb Hardesty

Carol Solomon & Herb Hardesty

Carol Solomon & Herb Hardesty.

We're sad to share news of the recent passing of two members of the New Orleans music community. Former WWOZ Board Chair and Peoples Health CEO Carol Solomon passed on Sunday, December 4. Herb Hardesty, saxophone great and long-time Fats Domino sideman, passed on December 3. Thoughts and prayers to both families.

This recipe is Jeremy Davenport's contribution to WWOZ's cookbook, That Sounds Good. "When I was a kid, my grandmother and my mom made this cake for me. Over the years, I've learned the recipe myself, and it's really good." If you've never made chocolate cake from scratch, this is great, straightforward recipe.
