5 things to know for 6/15 - 6/21

Published on: June 15th, 2018

1) Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there-- it's your day on Sunday and there's plenty to do! Perfect Gentlemen will be stepping out at 3p for their annual Father's Day Second Line Parade. The New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the Louisiana Children's Museum are offering free admission to dads. A few more local ideas here if you're looking to get out with dear ol' dad this weekend.

2) The Louisiana Bicycle Fest is happening in Abita Springs on Saturday from 8a-2p. The town has a beautiful bike path and plenty of family-friendly outdoor activities. The festival is free and allows patrons to ride, sell, trade, show-off, or give away your bike, parts, or accessories. They will be gathering in the field directly across from Town Hall near the Abita Mystery House.

3) Get out of the heat and into the air conditioned clubs! Tipitina's is hosting Good Enough For Good Times and the James Martin Band on Friday night as part of their Foundation Free Fridays series. Show starts at 10p. A few other picks for this week: Sierra Green & the Soul Machine at 21st Amendment Friday at 6p, Amigos de Samba at Bar Redux on Saturday at 9p, Mykia Jovan at the Blue Nile on Sunday at 7:30p, Gal Holiday & the Honky Tonk Revue at dba on Monday at 7p, The Little Big Horns followed by Smoking Time Jazz Club at the Spotted Cat on Tuesday at 6p and 10p, respectively, Jason Neville and Friends at Vaso on Wednesday at 6p, and Kermit Ruffins at Bullet's Sports Bar on Thursday at 7p. Find the whole listings for this week at the WWOZ Livewire.

4) Our in-studio previews for Cajun Zydeco Fest (June 23-24) start on Thursday as we welcome Sunpie & the Louisiana Sunspots onto the New Orleans Music Show around noon!

5) New Orleans lost a shining star last week. Tee-Eva's funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16 at Guiding Light Baptist Church on Washington Ave, starting at 10a. WWOZ captured portions of the second line that was held for her on Monday. There will be another one following the funeral on Saturday, organized by James Andrews. He asks that musicians, Baby Dolls, Mardi Gras Indians, and members of Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs join.
