Terence Blanchard will be honored with a Career Achievement Award, and the film Harriet, for which he composed the score, is the Closing Night Selection for this year’s festival. As usual, many films either focus on music or are of local interest, including Up From The Streets, a celebration of the culture of New Orleans through the lens of music. |

Volunteer Spotlight: Noelani MusicaroWWOZ’s Friday morning front desk volunteer is Noelani Musicaro, a woman with great style and great heart. Noelani enjoys talking with people and had a television show in New Jersey before moving to New Orleans. She often volunteers with OZ’s Video Unit during the Membership Drives. Noelani also hosts a show entitled "The Art of Kindness" on WHIV. We thank Noelani for her service to WWOZ and for being a supportive, positive, effective and active participant in the New Orleans community! |

Show Host Spotlight: Dean EllisDean Ellis, host of the Dean’s List, which airs midnight to 3 am on Mondays, started volunteering at WWOZ in 2000 after he was encouraged to do so by Katrina Geenen, the original host of our Brazilian Show, Tudo Bem. Dean says that he grew up hearing a lot of great music at home in the suburbs of New Jersey: contemporary jazz, blues and R&B. His love of Brazilian music came much later after he moved to New Orleans and made his first trip to Brazil. In addition to his own show, Dean shares the airwaves with Suzanne Corley of the World Journey, alternating as hosts of Tudo Bem on Saturday afternoons from 2-4 pm. We thank Dean Ellis for his dedicated service to WWOZ! |

Recipe: Jerk Chicken WingsA new way to fire up your next batch of hot wings: make some jerk sauce. The term "jerk" refers to both a seasoning mix (with lots of characteristically Jamaican ingredients like thyme, allspice, and scotch bonnet peppers) and a style of cooking (long, slow, low heat barbecue). Only meats that stands up to long slow heat can take the latter, pork and poultry being the most common. Chicken wings are perfect: since they have a high bone-meat ratio, they're harder (but not impossible) to overcook. |
