he Lost Sock, 840 N. Rampart (& Dumaine) is celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the “The Fat Man,” the first recording of the legendary Fats Domino on Tuesday, December 10th in the building that was formerly Cosimo Matassa’s J&M Recording Studio. On December 10, 1949 Antoine “Fats” Domino, his bandleader and co-writer Dave Bartholomew, and great New Orleans musicians including Earl Palmer, Herbert Hardesty, Ernest McLean and Frank Fields recorded “The Fat Man,” one of the records that kicked off Rock ‘n’ Roll. Cosimo Matassa, who engineered the record went on to record 100s of classic records which changed popular music, many with Domino, Bartholomew, and the great New Orleans musicians. Rick Coleman, author of Domino’s biography BLUE MONDAY, will talk at 6:00 PM about the historic event. At 7:00 he and special guests will join WWOZ’s Neil Pellegrin for a live broadcast of ‘50s R&B with Neil focusing on the anniversary and J&M history. Virginia Waldrop of The Lost Sock (504-766-0864) is returning the former home of J&M Studio to musical and artistic interests and honoring legendary New Orleans musicians.
