Prime Example
Upcoming Shows
In response to a dearth of modern jazz offerings in the local live music scene, WWOZ and Prime Example present a newly revived concert series, one that allows patrons to enjoy and "swing" to living legends of modern New Orleans jazz in an intimate, neighborhood lounge setting.
"Thursday Night Swingin'," hosted by Soul Sister
Where: The Prime Example Jazz Club, 1909 North Broad St.
When: Every Thursday night, beginning in February, 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
Admission is $15. (WWOZ members receive special discounted $10 admission with their membership card.)
For more information, contact the club at 504-944-0940 or primeexamplejazz@yahoo.com.
This Week & Beyond at Thursday Night Swingin':
2/07/13 Davell Crawford - pianist/vocalist
The grandson of 1950s R&B star James "Sugar Boy" Crawford of New Orleans is, as NPR Jazz wrote, "next in a line of New Orleans piano whizzes."
2/14/13 Delfeayo Marsalis - trombonist
Known as one of the freshest modern voices on trombone to arrive in the 90’s, Marsalis is a NEA Jazz Master and part of the Marsalis musical family dynasty, along with father Ellis, and siblings Wynton, Branford, and Jason.
2/21/13 Shannon Powell - drummer/vocalist
The virtuoso drummer, affectionately known as "the king of Treme," played at Preservation Hall and with Danny Barker and His Original Jazz Hounds before he was a teenager. He toured with Harry Connick Jr. from 1987-1992, and has performed with Diana Krall, Dr. John, John Scofield, Marcus Roberts, and many others.
2/28/13 Herlin Riley - master drummer
One of the most sought after drummers in the world, Riley was a member of Ahmad Jamal's group in the 1980s, and is a regularly featured musician at Jazz at Lincoln Center, under the helm of Wynton Marsalis. New Yorkers are still raving about his recent performance with pianist and Kennedy Center's Artistic Advisor for Jazz Jason Moran at the 2012 Blue Note (Club) Jazz Festival.
