Best of 'OZ 2017: Cyril Neville & Swamp Funk

Published on: December 26th, 2017

We're featuring WWOZ's top videos of 2017! In this, Cyril Neville & Swamp Funk perform 'Big Chief Jolly' at WWOZ on July 6. The song's namesake is the Neville Brothers' uncle and Big Chief of famous The Wild Tchoupitoulas. The tribe's 1976 album The Wild Tchoupitoulas is notable for many reasons, including because it marked the first time all four Neville brothers recorded together. 'Big Chief Jolly, ' as performed here, is a celebration not just of the Big Chief but of Mardi Gras Indian culture as a whole.
