Video: Cyril Neville & Swamp Funk 'Big Chief Jolly'

It's a big weekend at Tipitina's as the famed venue hosts "A Neville Family Groove: Celebrating 40 Years of Music at Tipitina's with the First Family of Funk" on Friday, November 24 and "The Funkin' Truth: Celebrating 40 Years of Music at Tipitina's with Grammy Lifetime Award Recipient and 2018 Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame Nominee Leo Nocentelli" on Saturday, November 25. The Friday show will feature two of the four original Neville Brothers, plus three sons of Neville Brothers-- Art's son Ian, Aaron's son Ivan, and Cyril's son Omari.

Congrats to Tipitina's on their big anniversary. Tips will always be close to our hearts at WWOZ-- we first hit the airwaves on 90.7 FM from a small room above the Tipitina's stage on December 4, 1980.

Check out this performance of 'Big Chief Jolly' from Cyril Neville & Swamp Funk at WWOZ from last July. The song's namesake is the Neville Brothers' uncle and Big Chief of famous The Wild Tchoupitoulas. The tribe's 1976 album The Wild Tchoupitoulas is notable for many reasons, including because it marked the first time all four Neville brothers recorded together. 'Big Chief Jolly, ' as performed here, is a celebration not just of the Big Chief but of Mardi Gras Indian culture as a whole.
