Seminar: "The Jazz Culture of New Orleans"

You're invited to attend a seminar on jazz culture presented by Dillard University and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series. The seminar will take place at Stern Hall Auditorium at Dillard University, 2601 Gentilly Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and from 10:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The program includes a screening of Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans, panel discussions, lectures and a jam session with Edward Anderson, Jesse McBride, Sasha Masakowski, drummer Herlin Riley and other top jazz musicians. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Tribute to Congo Square
The Congo Square Rhythms Festival is the cornerstone of a celebration of Congo Square presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation in October. The foundation presents panel discussions, dance concerts, art exhibits and a music festival that all explore the historical role of Congo Square in the development of American culture. Known to be one of few places in the United States where African slaves were allowed to continue their ancestral drumming and dance traditions, Congo Square has become famous as one of the birthplaces of American culture.
Congo Square Rhythms Festival
Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5
Don't miss the second annual Congo Square Rhythms Festival, presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation on Saturday and Sunday, October 4th and 5th, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year's festival will be held on the banks of Bayou St. John in Mid-City, at the intersection of Orleans Avenue. This free community event will celebrate the history and cultural significance of Congo Square with African music, dance, art and food.
This year's artists include Cupid, Donald Harrison Jr., Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Africa Brass, the Kumbuka African Dance Ensemble, just to name a few. Check out the full schedule.
Congo Square Exhibition
"The Influence of Congo Square on our Culture," the second annual Congo Square exhibition, will open on Saturday, October 4th at the foundation's Jazz & Heritage Gallery, 1205 N. Rampart Street.
Congo Square Cultures in Motion Dance Concert
