Dear Listener,

The big news is that WWOZ now has a Kamera Krewe, already in action, shooting our live performance broadcast of Lazy Lester, Li'l Buck Senegal and the ever-expressive Carol Fran from the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette, Louisiana last Friday night. Charlie Steiner, our new Video Unit Director and Aristide Phillips, assisted by Charlie's wife Leona, opened a new era for WWOZ, in which we have visions of many, many video streams to come from the hundreds of live performances 'OZ airs throughout the year. There also may be more 'OZ on local TV, in addition to our Guardians of the Groove series on WWL-TV and our Livewire features on WGNO's News with a Twist. Stay tuned.

Speaking of Aristide, I really, really hope you check out the video he produced for our web site spotlighting our summer intern program. For the past ten weeks, we have enjoyed the company of 6 college students who found their way to us (thank you Señor Internet!), even paying their own way, so they could study at the University of Hard Knocks aka WWOZ. They came all the way from Los Angeles, Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey, Long Island and Boston.

These interns represent but 6 of the 750 volunteers who keep the music flowing at WWOZ. Just like them, you, too, are free to knock on our door. If and when you do, we'll ask two things: what's your time pie (When are you available?) and what kind of muscles do you want to grow? Just because you're a great secretary or computer geek doesn't mean we'll insist you stay in character. (Although you can if you wanna.) If you feel like striking out to places you've never dared go before, 'OZ'll guide you. And the good news is, you'll be doing real world tasks in the trenches. When you leave 'OZ, it'll be with a new set of skills in your CV toolkit as well as important relationships in the area of your new found interest. At WWOZ, we won't expect you to do menial tasks unless you want to. We can fetch our own damn coffee, thank you very much. And if you don't believe me, check out Aristide's video posted on our website. It's an aspect of 'OZ you'll never see just looking at (or listening to) your radio.

Yours in snow balls and summer squalls,

Meet the Interns!

Summer Interns

Benjamin Russell and WWOZ Volunteer Coordinator Maryse Déjean.

WWOZ hosted six college interns this summer. These highly motivated young people are: Ishan Allen, James Bullard, Olivia Broslawsky, Benjamin Russell, Candace Crawford, and Lily Wasserman. The interns acquired hands-on experience in various aspects of radio, and produced a multimedia presentation exploring music lovers’ perceptions of jazz. Check out the video produced by another former WWOZ intern, Aristide Phillips, which reveals the tremendous energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm of WWOZ’s 2014 Summer Interns!
