Mudlark Public Theatre
Upcoming Shows
On the heels of their success at Tennessee Williams Festival, producer/director Dennis Monn and his troupe of musical performers will treat New Orleans audiences to Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, and Elisabeth Hauptmann’s “Mahagonny Songspiel”. After its controversial 1927 opening at Germany’s Baden Baden festival, the Songspiel went on to later draw the wrath of the Nazis. Of note, one of the songs, “Alabama Song”, was recorded by Jim Morrison and the Doors in 1969. The current production will mark the reopening of the Mudlark Public Theatre, closed since 2020. The proprietor of the Mudlark, Pandora Gastelum, is featured in the show, along with Chris Wecklein (both previously appeared in Monn’s “Threepenny Opera” and Happy End”). The cast includes Nessa Wheatly, Peter Canavello, and Scott Heron. LadyBayMiss is Musical Director, with Tommy McCarty on Violin, and Peter Bowling on Drums. Harry Mayronne, who plays piano for the Brecht/Weill cabaret second half of the program, created the marionettes as well as the German/English intro for the Songspiel. This is Dennis Monn’s third venture into the world of Brecht, Weill, and Hauptmann.
