Free Indigenous Studies Lecture: Introduction to the Atakapa-Ishak People and Language

Let's learn about a particular Indigenous People of Louisiana and Texas, one enslaved during colonization and who've made significant contributions to Louisiana' music and food,a peo ple who both exist and struggle for recognition. Special attention will be paid to the Ishākkoy language, of which the instructor is one of only a handful of speakers. Dr. Jeffery U. Darensbourg is a local words artist, performer, researcher, tour guide, and activist for Indigenous languages. He is the most published person about Bulbancha and a member of the Atakapa-Ishak Nation. Event is free and open to the public. No registration required.
