1) The New Orleans Musicians' Clinic and NOLA Organ Grinders are hosting their 5th annual Tropical Blood Drive on Sunday, August 19 from 11a-5p at Tipitina's. They're hoping to get 250 pints of blood. On-site services at the event include HIV and Hep C testing, stretching for dancers, mental health services, insurance services, and more. There are also mucho festivities going on-- live music, dance performances, a raffle, and much more!

2) Big concert at Tips this Saturday! Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Leo Nocentelli will hit the stage with special guests Anders Osborne, Deacon John and the Radiators' Dave Malone to cover Meters songs. Nocentelli will then close out the night himself.

3) WWOZ show hosts have been paying tribute to the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, who passed away Thursday morning at her home in Detroit. Listen to any of the shows on our 2-week archive. A few ideas for specific shows here, here, here, and here. Those links go directly to Aretha tribute shows with hosts Michael Dominici, The Creeper, DJ Swamp Boogie, and Ms. Smalls, respectively.

4) Two notable blues events this weekend-- stay close to home and enjoy Little Freddie King's return to his Friday night BJ's slot. Show starts at 10. Or, get out of town and head to the 2nd annual R.L. Boyce Picnic and Blues Celebration in Como, Mississippi, home of the hill country blues. The event celebrates the birthday of R. L. Boyce with two days of activities including a Como music history exhibit, workshop, and live performances on Friday night 5-11:45p with free food and beverage. All events, other than the blues guitar and fife-and-drum workshops, are free of charge.
