The 2015 Treme Creole Gumbo Festival returns to Armstrong Park Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15 with great gumbo and some of the best performers in today's New Orleans brass scene. This is the eighth annual incarnation of this free festival, presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

This year, the festival is making a special effort to recognize the roots and legacy of the New Orleans brass band tradition. In addition to presenting several of the city's most popular contemporary groups – including Rebirth, Hot 8, To Be Continued (TBC), Pinettes and Lagniappe Brass Bands – they're also are shining a spotlight on several of the bands whose names are familiar to students of brass band history.

The Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, originally founded by Danny Barker in 1970, will perform. The band is currently led by trombonist Lucien Barbarin, a member of the original band who comes from a long line of jazz performers. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra's brass band will bring a slightly different flavor to the festival. Magnetic Ear, led by saxophonist Martin Krusche, will also take to the stage.

Other historic bands this year include the Original Hurricane Brass Band, led by the trumpeter Leroy Jones (another alum of the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, pictured); the Onward Brass Band (led by Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown); and the Treme Brass Band (led by Benny Jones).

The winners of this year's Class Got Brass competition, Landry Walker and Edna Karr High School Brass Bands, will also perform, showcasing what the younger set is bringing to the brass band tradition.

There's also fantastic gumbo to be had, of course. Twelve vendors will be serving up a smorgasbord of New Orleans' signature dish, in a variety of style, including vegan. Gumbo z’herbes, shrimp and oyster, chicken and andouille, Creole filé, dark roux, and more will be served in the expanded food court.

The festival also features an Arts Market and Kids Area with local artists leading interactive and creative workshops. The Kids Area is inclusive for the very youngest brass fans with an enclosed area for diaper-changing and nursing.
