"See and Don't See" Rose Marie McCoy dug deep for that one. Nearly everyone knows a Rose Marie McCoy song, but few know of her as a most sought after songwriter in the early days of rock 'n' roll. Her biography, Thought We Were Writing the Blues: But They Called It Rock 'n' Roll, is now available online from Barnes and Noble and a radio documentary entitled Lady Writes the Blues can be heard over the internet.

To date, I have found over 360 artists who have recorded a Rose Marie McCoy song. So many of them legends: Elvis Presley, Nat "King" Cole, James Brown, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, Big Maybelle, Ike & Tina Turner, Big Joe Turner, Little Willie John, Jimmy Scott, Dizzy Gillespie, Ruth Brown, Dinah Washington and on and on.

Though the Songwriters Hall of Fame has overlooked this prolific writer, the Smithsonian Institute has not. The National Museum of African American History and Culture, scheduled to open in 2016,
is planning a Rose Marie McCoy exhibit. Long live her legacy.
