The Krewe of King James: Super Bad Sex Machine Strollers Krewe Announces its King, Musician Nigel Hall, and March in Krewe Delusion Parade, January 31

The Krewe of King James: Super Bad Sex Machine Strollers, founded by krewe captain DJ Soul Sister and led by Soul Sister and co-captain Pamela Blackmon of Funk Baby New Orleans, announce its first-ever honorary king, musician Nigel Hall. Hall, who will serve as KKJ King, Royal Good Foot Godfather, and Super Bad Soul Brother, will ride atop a float behind the marching krewe, who will parade for its second year in a row as part of the Krewe Delusion on Saturday, January 31, 7:00 p.m. in the French Quarter and Marigny.

Soul Sister, the WWOZ and live performance DJ, started the Krewe of King James in 2014 after years of wanting to create a Mardi Gras krewe in honor of her favorite artist, and in the style of other fun marching krewes she admired like the Camel Toe Lady Steppers, the Pussyfooters, the Cherry Bombs, and others. Unlike those krewes, however, marching membership is open to both women and men, and freestyle dancing is more common than choreographed routines. "Our mission is to 'get up offa that thing, don't take no mess for Mardi Gras, get on up, and get on the good foot, all in the name of Soul Brother #1," she says. The KKJ's 2015 theme is "Funky Side of Town," named after a song on James Brown's 1972 album Get on the Good Foot. In addition to marching to James Brown's music in Krewe Delusion, lucky paradegoers will have a chance to receive specialty KKJ throws along the parade route.

Nigel Hall is an acclaimed keyboardist and vocalist who, after growing up in Washington DC and living in New York, made New Orleans his home. When not on tour with bands like The Nth Power and Lettuce, he plays locally with Jon Cleary and the Nigel Hall Band. His love of James Brown is legendary, as he rounds out what has been called the triumverate of the greatest James Brown fans of all time, which also includes artists Questlove and Christian McBride.

The Krewe Delusion (and KKJ) route can be found at krewedelusion.org/parade-route/. Krewe Delusion will follow Krewe Du Vieux from the Marigny through part of the French Quarter.

The week after the KKJ's march in Krewe Delusion, it will throw its first-ever ball, the Good Foot Ball, on Friday, February 6, 9:00 p.m. at Gasa Gasa, featuring Pat Casey & the New Sound and DJ Soul Sister's "James Brown Get Down." The ball is open to the public, and tickets are $10 advance, $15 at the door. More info at gasagasa.com.
