This month’s feature (September): Warren Wolf and Wolfpack

Gem Sessions kicks off with young jazz star and vibraphonist Warren Wolf of Balitmore. Wolf and his group Wolfpack will celebrate the release of their new album Wolfgang on Mack Avenue Records, released on August 20 and produced by Grammy-winning bassist Christian McBride). The CD features two different three-man rhythm sections (McBride, pianist Benny Green, and drummer Lewis Nash; and pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Kris Funn and drummer Billy Williams, Jr.), as well as two noteworthy duo pieces with pianist/label-mate Aaron Diehl. Wolf has been called "one of the most influential young vibraphonists performing anywhere" by the San Diego County News, a "standout jazz vibraphonist" by USA Today, and a player with "firecracker assurance" by the New York Times. Wolfgang is currently #5 on JazzWeek's Top 50 Jazz Albums chart.

Wolf, a multi-instrumentalist (vibes, drums, piano) and one-time Berklee College of Music instructor, tours and performs with Christian McBride & Inside Straight, Bobby Watson's "Live and Learn" Sextet, and Karriem Riggins’ "Virtuoso Experience," among others, when not leading his own band. He also recently followed in the footsteps of vibes masters Bobby Hutcherson and Stefon Harris by becoming a member of the SFJazz Collective (both of whom precede him in the vibes chair).

He’s also performed or recorded with Wynton Marsalis and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Jeremy Pelt and "Creation," Tim Warfield, Adonis Rose, Anthony Wonsey, Aaron Goldberg, Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Reed, Mulgrew Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, David "Fathead" Newman, Stefon Harris, Kevin Eubanks, Curtis Lundy, Ron Carter, Wycliffe Gordon, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding, and many others.

At the New Orleans performances, Wolf will be joined by pianist Alex Brown, bassist Kris Funn, and drummer Billy Williams.
