The brilliant Badal Roy will visit WWOZ on Thursday March 18th for an interview with Jelly Roll Justice on Jazz from the Market. The acclaimed tabla genius will be in the Crescent City for several performances and teaching workshops from Tuesday through Saturday of that week. Accompanied by West Coast jazz guitarist Kenny Wessel, Roy will join creative forces with New Orleans musicians including saxophonist Tim Green, bassists James Singleton and Chris Severin, and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield to present a variety of performances which fuse Eastern Indian rhythms with American Jazz. On FRIDAY, MARCH 19th at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, Badal Roy, guitarist Kenny Wessel, bassist James Singleton and saxophonist Tim Green's performance will be aired on a live broadcast/webcast by your own WWOZ-FM Radio!! A Brief BADAL ROY Biography Roy began playing the tabla at age 10, studying with his uncle. After coming to New York to attend NYU at age 21, he began performing with Steve Gorn at a Manhattan restaurant called Raga, eventually attracting the attention of Miles Davis. Davis invited Roy to join his group, and he recorded on Davis's albums On the Corner (1972), Big Fun (1969-72; released 1974), and Get Up with It (1970-74). Roy subsequently performed and recorded with many leading jazz musicians, including Davis, Dave Liebman, Pharoah Sanders, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Herbie Mann, Pat Metheny, Lester Bowie, Airto Moreira, Charlie Haden, Purna Das Baul, Yoko Ono, and Ornette Coleman (playing in Coleman's electric band Prime Time). In the 1990s Roy began performing with the Brazilian guitar duo Duofel. His long-time collaboration with guitarist Ken Wessel started in Ornette Coleman’s band and continues today in a fusion trio named Alankar. They currently have one album entitled Daybreak. In late 2009, Roy appeared in a critically acclaimed performance with long-time collaborator and saxophonist Dave Liebman in Paris, France. Roy has devoted much of the last 2 years in presenting the music of Miles from India. This recorded tribute to Miles Davis, featuring Roy and Leibman, along with other Miles Davis veterans Gary Bartz, John McLaughlin, Ron Carter, Marcus Miller, Chick Corea and a host of master musicians from India has toured world-wide and received a Grammy nomination in 2008.
