Vocalist, composer, and arranger Ray Brown, jr. joins Charlie B by telephone from Los Angeles to talk about the special benefit concert taking place at Generations Hall, Saturday, April 25th. The star studded event, "Friends and Family Celebrate Ella's Birthday," is sponsored by the City of New Orleans and WWOZ. The show is presented by non-profit Active Music and will raise money for America's Wetland Foundation. Ray Jr., of course, is the son of legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerold. Ray Jr. will also talk about his latest CD, "Friends and Family," which features Ray's duets with some of the finest singers around. There'll also be a free "People's Concert" the day before, and both concerts will feature Ray Jr. performing with some of the artists who grace his CD. Pianist Jesse McBride stops by to play and talk about what his Next Genration Band is doing these days. Jesse has been keeping the flame alive by taking a collection of young and talented jazz musicians before audiences to interpret the creations of New Orleans stalwarts such as Harold Battiste, Alvin Batiste, and James Black. Who says jazz music is for old folks? Guitarist Cliff Hines, a University of New Orleans Jazz Studies major, will be dropping by to help dispel that myth. We'll also hear a track or two from the soon to be released Cliff Hines Quintet CD.
