Link Wray Day Was Jan 15 in Maryland
This was a fun show. Surprisingly fun. You can hear it at: http://www.virb.com/2681578360504589 Two big Washington, D.C. events were the musical motivation for this show: (1) DC resident, Link Wray, was celebrated with Link Wray Day today, January 15th, and (2) Barack Obama's DC music listening days begin next Tuesday, January 20th. Obama joins a long line of DC immigrants who'll wonder if there is any passionate music in a sterile, proper town where emotions are always in check. Surprise, DC has such a rich musical heritage that we'll limit ourselves to the narrowest slice imaginable - roots guitarists with pyrotechnic skills. Musician like: Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Bobby Radcliffe, Bobby Parker, Bill Kirchen, Roy Clark, Nils Lofgren, Bo Diddley and, of course, Link Wray. As always, look at my playlist for the songs, commentary, related video links and use the above URL to LINK TO THE ARCHIVED AUDIO. Also, send me an e-mail to receive the perfect, but completely indecent, Inauguration Ball song by The Clovers (Rotten _______ Ball). Oh yeah, some other DC musicians you'll hear on the link: Jimmy Rodgers, Billy Stewart, Tim Buckley, Pearl Bailey', Ruth Brown, The Orioles, The Clovers, Patsy Cline, Peter Tork (of the Monkees), Nighthawks, Jelly Roll Morton, (took up a long residence in DC) Duke Ellington, Root Boy Slim, Eve Cassiday, Chuck Brown, and Mary Chapin Carpenter singing "Down at the Twist and Shout" - a song about a club in a VFW Hall that booked Louisiana and other roots musicians. Thanks to everyone's favorite Army entomologist and zydeco dance instructor, Ben Pagac of Annapolis, MD for making this theme work. He gets another traditional three wishes from the WWOZ genies. (I hope he uses them to undo the terrible damages caused by his last round of human-genie misunderstandings.)
