Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers is a Grammy-winning band led by Dwayne Dopsie, the youngest son of famed accordionist Rockin’ Dopsie and one of the world’s hottest accordionists in his own right. The younger Dopsie (real name Dwayne Rubin) started on washboard at the age of six and graduated to the accordion at the ripe old age of seven. As a youngster, he played with his dad on a Super Bowl half-time show, and basically hasn’t stopped since. After the 1993 death of his father, Dopsie took to playing zydeco full-time, forming the Hellraisers in 1999, at the age of nineteen, the same year he was named “America’s Hottest Accordionist” by the American Accordion Association. With the Zydeco Hellraisers, Dopsie has been nominated for a Grammy award twice in the Best Regional Roots Album category; in 2022 they got the Grammy win for their role in the film, “Jazzfest: A New Orleans Story.” They’ve also won over 20 Offbeat and Big Easy awards. The energetic Dopsie infuses his zydeco with funk, reggae, blues, and pop flavors to keep things spicy and keep the dancers moving. The band has toured the world and is a fan favorite at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
