To the folks who may take this advice: I have several acts that overlap, I and you will have to make a choice.  At the Festival, the beautiful thing is listening to a bit here and a bit there, while stopping along the way for some food and drinks.  The evening shows, use the times as a guideline.  Many of these artists play several shows in a night and might be there right on time. Relax and make sure you eat and shower and occasionally put on fresh underwear!

This has got to be one of the biggest names to grace this stage.

 

Carlos Santana  is a Mexican and American musician who first became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered a fusion of rock and Latin American music. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms featuring percussion instruments such as timbales and congas not generally heard in rock music. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. In 2003 Rolling Stone magazine listed Santana at number 20 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He has won 10 Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards.

Ashley Kahn is an American music historian, journalist, and producer. 

 

His most critically acclaimed books have been on two major jazz albums, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. . His contributions as a journalist have appeared in the New York Times, Down Beat, Jazz Times, and Rolling Stone

One of the seminal jam bands of our generation will be returning to Jazz Fest for the first time since 1996.

 

Vermont's Phish's music blends elements of a wide variety of genres, including rock, jazz, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, funk, folk, bluegrass, and blues. Due to the band's improvisational style, their concerts are original in terms of the order and selection of songs and the way each song and set are performed.

 

This will be a rare festival and daytime performance or this band. New Orleans has waited 18 years for their return, so get out and dance in the sun with this band!

North Mississippi Allstars

 

North Mississippi Allstars is an American southern rock/blues band from Hernando, Mississippi, founded in 1996. The band is composed of brothers Luther Dickinson (guitar, vocals) and Cody Dickinson (drums, keyboards, electric washboard), and Chris Chew (electric bass guitar). In addition to the guitar

 

Allstars' first release, Shake Hands With Shorty, was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Blues Album". Since then, 51 Phantom and Electric Blue Watermelon have received nominations in that same category. The group also won a Blues Music Award for "Best New Artist Debut" in 2001.

 

This show will give you a trip to the hills of Mississippi without leaving NOLA!

One of the many new artists to take up residence in New Orleans.

Nigel Hall is an honest, humble guardian of soul music. When asked about himself, Nigel reflects, "I'm just someone

who lives, eats, drinks music." This ethic becomes clear when Nigel takes the stage. A mainstay on the Portland, ME scene, Nigel has recently toured with the funk powerhouse Lettuce, Nth Power, and The Warren Haynes Band. His energetic vocals add yet another layer of sonic depth and energy to every band he joins! 

 

Close your eyes and you may hear what you think is a young version of Donny Hathaway with a touch of George Duke.

The Cardinal Sons

 

Balancing heavy synth lines and crunchy guitar with steady drums, the three brothers of Cardinal Sons cultivate a sound steeped in the musical identity of their upbringing. Raised in Mississippi and finding a home in New Orleans -- John, Joe, and Dave play danceable, folky, indie rock leavened with three-part harmonies and a left hand for a bass player.

The Revivalists

 

The formation of The Revivalists was all about chance, but everything since then has been a combination of hard work, awesome music, and friendship. The septet has been playing nonstop since 2007, crafting a genre-hopping sound that rounds out traditional rock instrumentation with horns and pedal steel guitar and mixes the divergent backgrounds of its individual members with the humid, funky undercurrents of the band’s New Orleans home. The result is like English spoken with an exotic accent: familiar, yet difficult to pin down.

With no Meters show this year, this will be closest thing that you can get to experience the true power of funk and the first family funk.

 

The quintet's current lineup features Ivan Neville on vocals, B3 and Clav, the double bass attack and soulful voices of Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III, Ian Neville on guitar, and Nikki Glaspie on drums and vocals.

 

Formed in 2003, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk was initially put together by keyboardist Ivan Neville on a whim in order to perform a solo gig at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ivan called in cousin Ian Neville (guitar), the double-bass bottom of both Nick Daniels and Tony Hall, and drummer Raymond Weber (no longer in the band) to round out the show. The band was voted 2007's "New Orleans Best Funk Band" by both Offbeat Magazine and Gambit Weekly, and performs at some of the nation's largest music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Voodoo Fest, 10,000 Lakes, and High Sierra.

 

"Ivan is the son of Aaron Neville, and he joined his father along with two uncles — Art Neville of the Meters, who defined New Orleans funk, and Cyril Neville — in the Neville Brothers before starting Dumpstaphunk. Their funk follows through on the Nevilles’ distinctive style: a complex of syncopations developed from sudden bass lunges, chattery drumming, hooting keyboard chords and wah-wah guitar.
