1) Beignet Fest is coming to Lafayette Square on Saturday, October 8 with music, a kids village, and, of course, beignets of all kinds-- sweet and savory. Performers at the inaugural Beignet Fest include Big Sam's Funky Nation, John 'Papa' Gros, Los Po-Boy-Citos, The Confetti Park Players Chorus, and Alexandra Scott. The festival supports the Tres Doux Foundation, which supports children with autism in the New Orleans area. If beignets aren't your thing, hold out for next weekend when Chackbay hosts the Louisiana Gumbo Fest 10/14-10/16. This is also a free festival with live music and plenty of delicious gumbo.

2) Anba Dlo Halloween Festival is returning to the Healing Center at the end of this month but first up is their Water Symposium & Community Potluck on Thursday, October 13. Scientists, educators, and environmentalists will discuss the estimated impact of sea level rise and land subsidence on navigation, land loss, and flood protection; the dire consequences of a Future Without Action; and the need to use the Mississippi River to achieve coastal restoration through a comprehensive evaluation of a new channel for the river.

3) Prince of Wales Second Line Parade rolls this Sunday at 1p. We've got the route sheet at WWOZ's Takin' It To The Streets.

4) On Tuesday night, Neil Pellegrin hosted a tribute to Smiley Lewis on his 50s R&B Show. You can hear it on demand on our 2-week archive through October 17. For the tribute, Neil sat down with the people who knew Smiley best, including his daughter and a number of people he performed with or had great influence on.

5) In anticipation of the upcoming Crescent City Blues & BBQ Fest (Oct. 14-16), check out these video highlights from the last two years at the festival, captured by WWOZ, with performances from the Funky Meters with Allen Toussaint, Bobby Rush, Ruthie Foster, Excello Records Reunion, Little Freddie King, and many more. Jarekus Singleton's performance of 'Crime Scene' at the 2015 fest is below.
