Saxophonist Robin Boudreaux, master drummer Thierno Diabate, bassist Mike Harris, trombonist John DeLatouche, drummer Joe Stolarick, and ranger Matt Hampsey perform a concert that combines African rhythms with jazz standards.
XAVIER UNIVERSITY is hosting a special program highlighting unique local carnival customs, the NEW ORLEANS BLACK MARDI GRAS TRADITIONS EXTRAVAGANZA. The program will feature presentations by representatives of several longtime Carnival groups and practices, including Big Chief Darryl Montana (of the Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indian Tribe), Clarence Becknell (Zulu Club historian), Dr. Kim Vaz (author of The Baby Dolls), Cinnamon Black (Treme Million Dollar Baby Dolls), Royce Osborn (Skull & Bones Gang member and Producer of the documentary, All On A Mardi Gars Day) and Al “Carnival Time” Johnson (singer of Carnival Time). There will also be a performance by the TBC (To Be Continued) Brass Band. Each representative will discuss their personal experiences as well as the history and meaning of their tradition. They will also give brief demonstrations. This is a rare opportunity to see these unique local traditions presented together and also for the public to ask questions and interact with the authentic their authentic practitioners.
