Jivin' Gene
We are thrilled to announce this years recipient of the 2012 Big Easy award for WWOZ Volunteer Show Host of the Year: Jivin' Gene, the host of Tuesday evenings 50s R&B show. Jivin' Gene – known as Gene Mark outside of the OZ studio – has been a stalwart WWOZ volunteer and show host for thirty years. His parents raised him on Texas Swing, but once Jivin' Gene discovered rock and roll and R&B as a teenager, he traded in soda fountains for record stores and has been buying records ever since. |

WWOZ has been a volunteer-powered station since day one. Volunteering at WWOZ is a unique and exciting way to serve New Orleans and interact with our diverse music community. Volunteers are essential for WWOZ to support the local music community, as well as entertain, inform and educate our global audience.
Our small offices are fun, fast-paced and often chaotic. Over the years, we have found that the most successful formula is for a volunteer to work a consistent 3-4 hour weekly shift during regular business hours.
There are a variety of valuable services that you can offer WWOZ as a volunteer, including:
Basic technical aptitude and good verbal and written communication skills are a big plus. WWOZ provides plenty of training — you'll definitely learn new skills as part of your volunteer experience. Working knowledge of standard PC office applications is an essential skill for most positions. Volunteers are required to have e-mail that they check regularly.
After submitting your application to volunteer, we will call you to schedule an interview. Interviews are scheduled two weeks in advance and take place during normal business hours.
If you have any questions about volunteering, please call our business office at (504) 568-1239 or email volunteers@wwoz.org.
