'OZone Newsletter

Dear Listener,

Congratulations to all of our listeners who helped us slam it out of the park during the 2010 Fall Membership drive. While our local support continues to grow, the headline this year is the steady growth in our out-of-town membership—currently north of 48% of total donations. We’ve seen this trend since 2005, but now we’re poised to cross the 50% threshold. Thank you Paris! Thank you New York! Thank you Japan! Still waiting for Kazakhstan!

It’s now autumn in New Orleans, and that means Crescent City Blues and BBQ Fest, Voodoo Music Experience, Boo Carré Halloween & Harvest Fest, Fiesta Latina, Congo Square Rhythms Fest and bunches of pre- and post-Saints-ebrations and Thanksgivingmas warm-ups.

Hey New Orleans: Time to get your party on!

Yours in streetcars and tip jars,

Krewe of Roux: Sustainer Membership

HatsDuring our recent Fall Drive, WWOZ launched a brand-new way for you to become a guardian of the groove: Krewe of Roux Sustaining Members make an ongoing monthly contribution to WWOZ via a credit or debit card (minimum $5 per month). Your card will automatically be billed each month, and your membership never expires. Like the roux that Creole cooks use as the base of their sauces, soups and étouffées, the Krewe of Roux is the foundation of the delicious gumbo you hear on 'OZ every day. It provides steady monthly income and cuts our mailing and processing costs, letting more of your money support the programming you love.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gail Furillo

Musica LatinaAs a volunteer-powered community radio station, WWOZ places extraordinary value on people who donate their time. Gail Furillo (pictured), a member of 'OZ for 6 years, routinely goes above and beyond the call of duty. For our Fall Membership Drive, Gail raised around $1300 by calling friends and relatives who listen to 'OZ online and getting them to donate. "Since I am very enthusiastic about 'OZ it was easy to transfer the enthusiasm," she says. Way to go, Gail!

October Recipe: Oven Barbecue Shrimp & Sweet Potato Grits

ShrimpThis month's recipe for barbecue shrimp and sweet potato grits comes from Priscilla Yee of Concord, California. Use Louisiana shrimp if you can get 'em, and you barbecue them in your oven instead of outdoors—perfect if you live somewhere with cold fall weather. Asian chili garlic sauce adds some extra spice to this mouth-watering dish. If you like the recipe, then check out Louisiana Cookin' magazine. Subscribe with the promotion code wwoz2010, and they'll donate $5 to WWOZ.
