'OZone Email Newsletter for July, 2010

'OZone Newsletter

Dear Listener,

Wouldn't it be cool if...?

July is planning month at WWOZ, and there seems to be no end to the exciting ideas swirling about. Did you ever wish there was something that 'OZ could be doing but hasn't gotten around to yet? If you've got ideas about web site enhancements, mobile apps, social networking, or anything else buzzing around in your head, we want to hear them. Shoot us an email with ways you think WWOZ can do better at feedback@wwoz.org. While we can't make any promises, we'll certainly throw new ideas at the wall along with the rest of our mind-spaghetti to see what sticks. There's always a lot going on at 'OZ — and the fun never stops — but we want to make sure we're giving our listeners the best possible experience online and on air.

Yours in street musicians and politicians,

Satchmo SummerFest 10th Anniversary

Oil-soaked birdThe 10th Annual Satchmo SummerFest blows into New Orleans August 5-8 in tribute to Crescent City icon Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, brought to you by French Quarter Festivals Inc. It kicks off with an art show, followed by the Satchmo Club Strut with performances by some of the city's top local acts at venues along Frenchmen Street. The festival culminates in a 2-day outdoor music extravaganza on multiple stages near the old U.S. Mint in the French Quarter, and WWOZ will bring it to you live on air and online. Beat the heat with music in the street!

Gulf Coast Benefit Events: Updates and Photo Galleries

GalacticWe hope you've been keeping an eye on our updated list of BP oil disaster benefit events in greater New Orleans.... The past few have been extremely successful, including a concert at Tipitina's featuring Galactic (pictured), Ivan Neville and lots more — check out the night in pictures on our Facebook page. On July 24, there's an event we want to point you towards even though it's outside the greater New Orleans area: the Island Aid concert in Grand Isle, LA. Proceeds will help the town's tourism and fishing industries recover from the devastating Gulf oil disaster.

A Trio of July Birthdays: Ferbos, King & Slaughter

Lionel FerbosTwo elder statesmen of New Orleans music celebrate birthdays in mid-July: Bluesman Little Freddie King's b-day gala is at BJ's Lounge in the Bywater on July 16, and trumpeter Lionel Ferbos (pictured) rings in his 99th year at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe in the French Quarter on July 17. Fiery young saxophonist (and former Trombone Shorty sideman) Clarence "Trixzie" Slaughter is also having a birthday bash at the Blue Nile on Frenchmen St. July 20. Come out to the parties and wish these guys a happy birthday!

Globetrotting with 'OZ Show Hosts

Herlin Riley and Shannon PowellWWOZ volunteer Sally Young and show host Jamie Dell'Apa have been traveling far and wide to bring you news from other parts of the world. Sally was recently in Switzerland for the JazzAscona Festival, where New Orleanians Herlin Riley and Shannon Powell (pictured) were honored with awards, and other Crescent City musicians like Lionel Batiste and Charlie Miller made appearances. Jamie was off in South Africa and sent us some poignant observations from the World Cup matches at Pretoria Stadium. Check out what these globetrotters say and saw on the WWOZ blog.

Show Host Spotlight: Brazil and Beyond with Suzanne Corley

Tudo BemSuzanne Corley brings you a healthy dose of music from abroad every Saturday afternoon on back-to-back shows Tudo Bem, dedicated to the music of Brazil, and World Journey, in which she draws from cultures around the globe. After 6 years on the air, Suzanne opens up about what makes being an 'OZ show host so much fun and what inspired her passion for Brazil. July Recipe: Louisiana Jumbo Lump Crab and Beet Salad

Lump Crab and Beet SaladThis month's recipe comes from Brian Landry, Executive Chef of Galatoire’s Restaurant in New Orleans and Galatoire’s Bistro in Baton Rouge. When you're out shopping, please do your best to buy Louisiana seafood — that's the kind of support fishermen, families and businesses need right now. If you like the recipe, then check out Louisiana Cookin' magazine. Subscribe with the promotion code wwoz2010, and they'll donate $5 to WWOZ.
