A Closer Walk: New Orleans Music History MapA Closer Walk, our block-by-block online guide to New Orleans’ music history, lets you find historic New Orleans music sites of all kinds. It also gives you historical context. For example, the article "The Role of Benevolent Societies and Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs in the Development of New Orleans Music" explores how such groups fostered the birth of jazz and sustained New Orleans’ brass band tradition, keeping the foundational rhythms and rituals of New Orleans music accessible to successive generations of artists, who derived new forms from them throughout the 20th century. |

Gerald French Shoutout!Gerald French loves community, and that great love is the propelling force to his generosity. "I’m like the Swiss army knife," he once said, "just throw me in there!" As host of a Thursday afternoon blues show, and the programmer of the Friday morning traditional jazz show, Gerald serves up an impeccable playlist and still finds time to make WWOZ shine . We wanted to take a few minutes to convey a huge "Thank You" to Gerald and his historic Original Tuxedo Jazz Band, for his exceptional gift of time and talent during the first half of 2025 as we raised funds, hosted members of the station at our new home in Jax Brewery, and carried out our broadcast from Jazz Fest at the Fairgrounds. We love and appreciate you, Gerald! |

Recipe: Jerk Chicken PastaMore "Jamerican" than authentically Jamaican, this Jerk Chicken Pasta recipe does contain a number of the key ingredients in Jamaican cuisine: allspice, thyme, scallions, and scotch bonnet/habanero pepper. Whatever the provenance, it's very delicious and good, spicy summertime food. |
