Please join us on World IP Day, April 26, for a FREE workshop covering the basics of copyright and intellectual property law topics as they apply to artists of all kinds. WHEN: Thursday, April 26 - 12 noon WHERE: Mags 940, 940 Elysian Fields Ave (at corner of N. Rampart) NO CHARGE / FREE WORKSHOP WHO: Class taught by Max Hass and Bri Whetstone (both licensed Louisiana attorneys focusing in entertainment, arts and intellectual property law). Copyright is part of a set of property rights that enable artists to monetize their creativity and earn a living from doing what they love. The trouble is, it comes from a complex area of the law that relatively few people understand. As a result, many artists don't get the full benefit of what the law provides for them. In this workshop, Max Hass and Bri Whetstone (Louisiana-licensed entertainment attorneys) will walk through the basics of copyright law, focusing on the specific needs of artists, musicians, filmmakers, etc. Participants will learn about the rights they have in their work, and how to use those rights to maintain creative and financial control over their projects. This workshop will be an introduction to copyright issues, including an explanation of what copyrights are, information on registering copyrights, an overview of other areas of intellectual property law, and issues related to collaboration, commissions, and some contracts commonly encountered by artists. This workshop is part of the worldwide celebration of intellectual property law and the powerful rights those laws create, called World IP Day (http://www.wipo.int/ip-outreach/en/ipday/). We present this workshop with the support and assistance of the Copyright Alliance and The Ella Project. NOTE: This workshop is an overview of certain areas of law concerning copyright and contract, and is intended for educational purposes only. The workshop will not provide legal advice. If you have a specific legal problem, you should consult an attorney. The workshop instructors may be able to put you in touch with attorneys if needed.
