NOEW Panel, Intersection of Arts & Real Estate (Creative Industries Forum)

The Downtown Development District (DDD) and Creative Alliance of New Orleans (CANO) present a forum during Idea Village's New Orleans Entrepreneur Week to explore the most effective strategies for combining real estate resources and creative industries production and programming for revitalizing urban neighborhoods and promoting citywide economic development.     Opening the discussion will be the nation's leading non-profit arts developer, responsible for almost 60 large-scale arts facilities: Kelley Lindquist, President of Artspace.      Artspace, a non-profit, specializes in repurposing properties for affordable residential, studio and workspace for artists, arts and cultural organizations, and creative businesses. Artspace is responsible for more than 50 operational properties. Kelley Lindquist will be revisiting New Orleans almost to the year since Artspace opened its doors for the $37 million Bell Artspace Campus in Treme. 
     Also on the panel are real estate leaders who have integrated creative uses in their projects, and who are part of citywide initiatives to grow the creative sectors of their cities, as well as creatives who we hope will grow their careers in New Orleans, including: Lieven Bertels, Director, The Momentary, an adaptive reuse project that will transform a decommissioned Kraft Foods plant near Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AK into a multi-disciplinary space for visual, culinary, and performing arts and an artist-in-residency program. Bertels will be discussing the arts as a vehicle for community transformation.  Brian Giattina, Steering Committee Chairperson, Create Birmingham, describes the coalition that developed “Stoking Innovation in the Magic City: Birmingham’s Creative Industries, A Report to the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham”, 2014, and evaluates the impact of the implementation of the initiative. Tara Hernandez, President, JCH Properties, on how the arts have played an important role in her company's developments, including the Blue Plate Artists Lofts. Her commitment to the arts is also reflected in her new role as chair of the New Orleans Music Initiative. Jonathan Jackson, Independent Filmmaker, Managing Partner at The Colored Section, talking about creating short form content and films distributed independently through streaming sites, the business of film, and future prospects to continue locally. He will describe the decision making of producers deciding on staying in or leaving the New Orleans region. Jeanne Nathan, Executive Director, Creative Alliance of New Orleans, Co-Founder of the Contemporary Arts Center, on how the CAC enlivened a warehouse district in decline with the help of the Downtown Development District, Louisiana World’s Fair, warehouse developers and Preservation Resource Center Matt Schwartz, President & CEO, Domain Properties, discussing the significance of cultural programming, design features, and co-location with cultural entities as part of the business plan for Domain Properties
     Leaders and influencers from cultural, community, business, government and educational sectors will also be in attendance. A light brunch will be available following the panel and discussion which begins at 10:00 a.m., continuing through 11:30 at the Contemporary Arts Center.
