Sketching in the Courtyard

Sunday, March 24, 2019 - 11:00am
Enjoy drawing time in our courtyard led by local artist Sarah Nelson and use the natural beauty and historical elements of this French Quarter courtyard for inspiration! All levels of drawing experience are welcome, including those who are picking up a pencil for the first time. We will provide basic materials, but guests are invited to bring their favorite tools. The program will last two hours and features a local artist who will offer guidance and instruction on sketching various aspects of this beautiful courtyard, complete with architectural features, historical buildings, blooming gardens and more. Materials will be provided, and refreshments will be served. $20 for members; $25 for nonmembers. About the Artist: Sarah Nelson is a visual artist living and working in New Orleans, LA. She received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Printmaking, from the University of New Hampshire. She has developed a technique in her painting practice that combines the physical grain of the wood panel surface with the composition of her images. First painting her image using a translucent mixture of oil paint, she then partially sands the paint away. This ingrains the paint into the lower valley of each individual wood grain. Upon close inspection, the wood grain switches back and forth, from light sanded wood at the grain’s peak, to a dark pigmented wood at the grain’s valley. Her work is shown in museums, galleries, private residences, and public collections throughout the nation, most recently exhibiting at the Ogden Museum of Southern art and gaining a permanent display at the new Louisiana State University Hospital. She has participated each year since 2015 in the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Contemporary Crafts Exhibition and is a regional semi finalist the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. She is currently represented by Ariodante Gallery, Claire Elizabeth Gallery, and is a member of the Where Y’Art artist collective.
