A Tocar! Bomba de Puerto Rico, presented by the Bombazo Dance Company, incorporates drums, singing and dancing to celebrate the NolaRican identity – connecting Caribbean heritage with the rhythms of Louisiana, and sharing the story of celebration and resistance through dance and rhythm. The Puerto Rican Bomba is a 400-year old style of music and dance rooted in West Africa and defined by complex rhythms, call and response between singers and musicians, and the interaction between dancers and drummers. The music is primarily driven by drums (bomba barrels or barriles), the cuá (two sticks played on the drum's wood), and maracas, and uniquely, the drums follow the dancers’ movements, rather than the dancers moving to the beat.
