Saxophonist Alvin "Red" Tyler: A True New Orleans Musical Hero, Part 1

On May 9, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival honored the life, legacy, and memory of the great saxophonist Alvin "Red" Tyler. Tyler was an integral part of the J&M Studio band run by Dave Bartholomew, which backed up everyone from Fats Domino and Little Richard to Shirley and Lee in the 1950s and 1960s. Later, Tyler formed AFO Records with several other partners (including Harold Battiste and Chuck Badie) and played jazz and funk with luminaries including Ed Frank, James Booker, Germaine Bazzle, and Dr. John.
