Program: Fresh Fig Jam with Olivia Greene (Trad. Jazz)
This being the Wednesday leading up to Satchmo Summerfest, we were especially happy that Kid Chocolate, one of the most highly regarded trumpet players to come out of New Orleans, stopped by to give us an early listen to his brand-new cd "My Take presented by New Orleans' Own Kid Chocolate". Deep vintage roots and bright new lush sounds coalesced and enchanted me so much that I almost forgot to resume hosting the radio show! All of the tunes on Kid Chocolate's album were from Louis Armstrong's repertoire, making this album Kid Chocolate's tribute to Satchmo.
THEN piano prince Davell Crawford appeared in the WWOZ broadcast studio, and we lucky listeners were blown away by Davell Crawford's and Kid Chocolate's impromptu playing and singing live in the studio!
Davell Crawford was my choir director pre-federal flood, so I of course followed his lead when he pointed to me to sing as he started to play "What a Wonderful World". Davell Crawford, Kid Chocolate and I followed Davell's direction as he created a lovely, three-voice spontaneous arrangement of the song made famous by Louis Armstrong, native son of New Orleans and raison d'etre of Satchmo Summerfest! It was a wonderful world indeed at WWOZ!
