Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa
The WWOZ listener survey for Saturday night (me and the phone) indicates most of our listeners are drunks, cab drivers or musicians and patrons of New Orleans music clubs. The balance are record collectors or emergency room workers who repair the main listener categories. Still there is the always perennial drunken slurred request for the hippie blues of; "Mustang Sally drove the Freeway to Stairbird at Brown Eyed Gloria's House of the Rising Stormy Monday."
How do you program for this demographic? A bunch of dance instructional songs with a spotlight on musician "sidemen" who made a big sound without big headlines. Of the latter, Saturday nights have focused on Rene Hall, Earl Palmer, Charles Conner, Joel Dorn, Wild Jimmy Spruill, Doc Pomus, Mickey Baker and tonight Don Sugarcane Harris and Dewey Terry who recorded by the group name of "Don and Dewey." I guess the public service musical strategy is to get the drunks dancing until they fall over (so that they don't drive) and keep the emergency workers awake until the broken drunks come in. Well here goes:
P.S. The chronology of these songs isn't based on what happened last night. It's a goofy radio show and this posting is on the internet so accuracy isn't expected.
Ah crap. I felt guilty. Here's an accurate posting of songs, announcer breaks and interstitials. Nope we're still missing the radio sound barrier of an average of one selection every minutes by 33%...

The Hucklebuck
The R&B Box
Always have to have a dance instruction song every Saturday night and tonight we're gonna get everyone to do the Hucklebuck. This video has Ed Norton teaching Ralph Kramden (and you) to do the Hucklebuck. And Ed can dance it!
