Program: Fresh Fig Jam with Olivia Greene (Trad. Jazz)
Today is the first broadcast of Olivia Greene's "Fresh Fig Jam" traditional jazz radio show. The name of the show is is a tribute to "Big Mama" Betty Rankin and her early WWOZ traditional jazz show "Moldy Fig Jam" (Moldy Figs being a somewhat derisive term that was used to describe traditional jazz fans in Betty's day).
Betty Rankin began volunteering at the then-fledgling radio station WWOZ in the early 1980s. When WWOZ later went online internationally with its broadcasts, Betty Rankin's "Moldy Fig Jam" became one of the (if not THE) first-ever New Orleans traditional jazz radio shows to achieve world-wide popularity.
"Big Mama" Betty Rankin passed away in 1998.
