Drunks Versus Sobers
Oh sure, you were ready for a show about being a ground zero hero as WWOZ fights off the 2am landfall of Bonny, the maybe hurricane, maybe tropical storm on steroids.
Bobby Jindal is overjoyed at the potential to distinguish himself from Kathleen Blanco and her bad seed daughter, Katrina but alas no hurricane. If could find an R&B version of it, we would start the show with, "My Bonny Lies Over The Ocean."
As I write this, we're at the peak of Bonny and this is the wimpiest storm in New Orleans history. Rain? I'm gonna have to water my plants tomorrow. Wind? The noisy studio fan creates more wind than this storm. Surge? Bobby Jindal is gonna have to rely on the leak in the Gulf to get any surge.
Nah, Bonny is a non-story. Let's instead focus on ... YOU.
For the years I've done this Saturday midnight to Sunday 3am shift, I've received hundreds and hundreds of phone calls from listeners who's main characteristic is they're drunk. Loaded, juiced, emulsified, looped but definitely not lucid. I have never received more than two sobers in a row on the phone.
As the only sober in the Quarter on Saturday night, I'm devoted to all science, all the time. Anecdotal listener trends - puhleease. Tonight we bring in the most esteemed radio surveyor since Francios Arbitron to measure (1) the collective blood alcohol content of this shift's listeners and (2) whether we could tally three sober callers in a row. Yep, for you pinch-faced moralists, my fourteen year old niece, Gemma Gallinaro is here at the radio station in drunkard central (French Quarter Saturday midnight until 3am) to measure the blood alcohol content of listeners.
The next day:
Survey Results
17 Callers of which:
1 Sober but crazy (his self-diagnosis)
4 Sobers (no further diagnosis)
1 Temporary sober - just got off work at 2am
2 From Ed who's sober but had to pee and couldn't go back to sleep
9 Garden-variety drunk and, drum roll please:
3 Sobers in a row which BREAKS THE RECORD for this shift
Call distribution summary
Sobers tended to call in clusters immediately after we announced the phone number indicating an ear-to-finger coordination skill that the drunks lacked. Drunks probably are also under-represented as the phone number 568 1234 is too similar to the next-to-impossible roadside drunk test of "count to four."
Distribution:
Sober, Crazy and Sober, Drunk, Drunk, Sober, Drunk, Drunk, Drunk, Sober, Sober, Sober (record broken!), Drunk, Drunk, Ed/pee, Ed/pee, Drunk, Drunk.
Plus some lawyer who kept rambling to my 14 year old niece at 2:45am about the legal definition of a hurricane versus tropical storm then repeated the whole boring recitation to me. Ah, the unbridled self-esteem of my former profession - he was actually worried I was recording him. I didn't have the heart to tell him we were simply trying to get him off the phone so we didn't have to hear him.
