Special Show Blog Post: Friends
Just a couple hours ago, Martha Craven called to tell me her husband and my close friend, Frank Martorana only had a couple more days to live. Coincidentally (!), I had been working up a musically themed show based on friendship all week. So tonight, a musical tribute to that most fundamental of human needs, friendship - with a dedication to three decades of a special friendship I enjoyed with Frank.
I'll be back in a couple weeks.

I Wanna Be A Friend Of Yours
Link is to another King Cole song about friendship. He might have a half dozen on this topic.

Ah finally, a video that matches the song and artist of the playlist. From New Orleans, Eddie Bo:

Making Friends
From the great (but infamous) Newport Jazz Festival in 1960. A catalyst in the blue revival period, this festival was cut short over what could only be considered one of the wackier conflicts in our culture-history - police versus hippies.

From Texas to New Orleans
Dr. John's autobiography, his performances and recordings and his producer roles he elevated this great song into a New Orleans standard. From 1986:

Dr. John
My Buddy
In A Sentimental Mood
Hey Frank,
I know how you like Dr. John. The lyrics apply - I'm gonna miss my buddy. |
Can't stray too far from New Orleans:
