Special Show Blog Post: Friends

Just a couple hours ago, Martha Craven called to tell me her husband and my close friend, Frank Martorana only had a couple more days to live.  Coincidentally (!), I had been working up a musically themed show based on friendship all week.  So tonight, a musical tribute to that most fundamental of human needs, friendship - with a dedication to three decades of a special friendship I enjoyed with Frank.

I'll be back in a couple weeks.

Playlist Tracks

Louis Jordan
You Will Always Have A Friend
Let the Good Times Roll

You're A Friend Of Mine
Fire On The Bayou

Can't stray too far from New Orleans:

Jimi Hendrix
My Friend

A stripped down, home recording of this song.  Outside of the audio distractions, it works surprisingly well:

Friendship Dam
Nat King Cole
I Wanna Be A Friend Of Yours

Link is to another King Cole song about friendship. He might have a half dozen on this topic.
Eddie Bo with Inez Cheatman
Lover And A Friend

Ah finally, a video that matches the song and artist of the playlist. From New Orleans, Eddie Bo:

Muddy Waters
Making Friends

From the great (but infamous) Newport Jazz Festival in 1960.  A catalyst in the blue revival period, this festival was cut short over what could only be considered one of the wackier conflicts in our culture-history - police versus hippies.
Please Be My Girlfriend
Aladdin and Imperial Sides
Eddie Bo
Just Friends
Vippin and Voppin
Sarah Vaughn
Benny Carter Sessions
Cowboy Mouth
Lovers or Friends
Reverend Billy C. Wirtz
Just Friends
Sister Rosetta Tharp
Don't Take Everybody To Be Your Friend
The Original Soul Sister

Great visual on this video:

Goin' Back To New Orleans
Royal Jokers
I Don't Like You That Much

I'm Stickin' With You
James "Wee Willie" Wayne
Junco Partner
From Texas to New Orleans

Dr. John's autobiography, his performances and recordings and his producer roles he elevated this great song into a New Orleans standard.  From 1986:

Dr. John
My Buddy
In A Sentimental Mood

Hey Frank,

I know how you like Dr. John.  The lyrics apply - I'm gonna miss my buddy.
