Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa
I went to the Krewe du Vieux's Brew Doo in the post-fire Den of Muses. With no lights or heat since last summer's electrical fire, the Cave of Blown Fuses is more like it. And that is the cold dark inspiration for tonight's show.
Sets of music about cats (I've got a couple dogs), the closing of the British UFO hotline (who worked in that career builder office?), rabbit hunting (yeah, that's pretty dark and cold) and the crime and trail and son of Stagger Lee.
If we have time we'll really upset the non-sensibilities of the drunk driver audience with the group that was the Weird Al Yankovich of the last generation, Homer and Jethro.

Box Score
130 Selections over 210 minute for a change every 90 seconds. If you don't like what you're hearing, I'll have something new when you come back from the bathroom.
2:00pm Time I woke up after the show and it looked like the Saints had lost
12 N.O. By the time I got to the lucky drag bar to watch the game.
0 Number of prostitutes hanging around outside of my house
40 Degrees was the outside temperature when I took this morning's outdoor shower. Who needs a spa when you can live in a French Quarter historic house?
21 Number of cats sung about in tonight's show
And finally, my thanks to Dwayne for not firing me again this week and to The Hound and New Orleans for the inspiration and music. Also, to Comrade Chris formerly of WHFS, Bethesda and hopefully soon of WWOZ, New Orleans for the signed Root Boy Slim 45rpm - Xmas at Kmart. Thank you - I am touched. And listen for Chris when he gets back on the air - it'll be a treat!
Who's Root Boy? He's the guy who launched jazz great Ron Holloway's career and probably helped George W. Bush hit bottom (when these two shared the same Yale fraternity). Look for both Ron and George in this video.

The Invasion
On December 1 the British Ministry of Defence terminated its UFO hotline where the public reported 12,000 incidents over 50 years. I thought this news story was over-the-top goofy but 60+ years ago London's airspace was filled with new V1 and V2 rockets as Hitler was developing new jet airplanes to bomb London.
We've had some horrific attacks on America but nothing like London in WWII. This UFO hotline story was too glibly reported here in the US. I'm happy we've been lucky enough to misunderstand their mindsets.

Marvin Rainwater
Tough Tom Cat
Another set of music from the Fuzzy Animal Department - songs about cats that feature humans making "meow" noises. What is it about humans that they can't help but make "meowing," "moo-ing" and barking sounds when the topic is cats, cows or dogs? Doesn't happen with frogs, birds or horses. Just with three letter mammals.
Starting with two songs about being afraid of cats.
Marvin's song is a knock off of "Big John."

Bunker Hill
The Girl Can't Dance
http://www.spinner.com/2009/07/31/twisted-tales-gospel-star-david-walker-moonlights-as-randb-scream/
The mighty, mighty Bunker Hill was born David Walker on May 5, 1941, and was raised in the Washington, DC, area. Walker was a successful gospel singer, first with the Sensational Wonders and then with the Mighty Clouds of Joy, on whose Peacock Records sides he can be heard.
Walker was also a successful heavyweight boxer, boasting a creditable record of 18-7 and working as sparring partner for light heavyweight champ Archie Moore. In the early sixties, Walker was christened Bunker Hill and under the guidance of Vernon Wray, recorded three frantic secular singles, all backed by Vernon's brother Link Wray along with the Raymen. Bunker Hill - vocals, Link Wray - guitar, Vernon Wray - piano, Doug Wray - drums, Shorty Horton - bass The debut disc, "Hide and Go Seek", was Bunker Hill's biggest hit, cracking the top 40 in 1962 and becoming a regional smash in the DC area. Two highly charged singles followed, "Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf" and the unruly "The Girl Can't Dance", and while neither did much business in their day, both enjoy serious dance floor racket time today. http://www.myspace.com/bunkerhill |

Remember a cave is just a hole on it's side. I'm thinking the lyrics were written backwards - Julie is one of the finest horror screamer's I've ever heard. They just needed a vehicle to surround her golden vocal chords.
