HUH!

This week the Mambo Institute declared the magic word that makes a fair song great is a loudly grunted "Huh."  I've been "huh"-ing in my sentences and it works just as good for spicing up everyday conversations.  HUH!  Yeah.

Tonight, 17 songs featuring HUH! in the title or the lyrics and I'm going to dance the mambo throughout the entire set of music including announcer breaks.  After a week of HUH and practicing, I'm sure I can keep my head absolutely steady and inches from the mic while my lower body may will range ten feet in all directions as I announce.   See if you can find me in the thirty-odd (and I do mean odd) mambo dance video links embedded in the below playlist.  (These are really fun links.  They've kept me up all night - it's 5:40am.)

We'll also give a salute to those confused cowboys who have come to town during Southern Decadence.  As a native westerner, I spotted the cowboy boots and hats plus the black leather vests and chaps in the crowd.   I'm guessing they drove their herd into the Fat City slaughterhouses then lost their newfound riches, at the casino as when I saw them, they were down to their thong underwear.  HUH!  Thankfully they sensibly kept their cowboy identity clothing but it's gonna be a long dusty trail back home.

Plenty of topical sets of music tonight including a set about personal cleanliness set that could be used as evidence for my future sanity hearing.  Also sets about dogs, cows, narrative songs (The Cave Part I and II by Gary "Spider" Webb - "Oh Jimmy, Jimmy!  Where are you Julie.  Julie!!!  Julie!!!") and the standard public radio announcer and music rant about: kill your TV before it kills your imagination.

 Tonight's Box Score:

110 Selections over three hours (1:35 per selection)

  61 Songs

  49 Interstitials

    2 Many announcer breaks

1 Phone call into the station (usually Ed alone accounts for a dozen)

0 Prostitutes hanging around my house (wrong convention)

1000s   Of bears hanging around my house

    0 Michael Jackson tributes

    0 Bobby Lounge songs

7 Adverbs slip ups ("That was a great song" - if it wasn't then don't play it)

26 Mambo dancing videos (links are under the songs below)

0 Number of video links more inspiring than the only link posted from last week's show - the link to the Alan Able documentary on Hulu.com   You gotta watch that one.

Playlist Tracks

Red and Blue
"TV Baby"
The link sets the scene for the largest part of tonight's show - HUH. Dinah Shore describes the musical link between Louisiana and the Caribbean. From Perez Prado to Jumbo Al Hirt. Really Dinah Shore nails tonight's theme. But the regret is that the next week's Dinah Shore show would have had Gale Storm (Flipsville) with Roy Rodgers - ohhhhhh! I think this song is Doc Pomus. A post-Katrina looting, this vinyl LP lost most of the label.
Jimmy Anderson
"Goin' Crazy Over TV"
Link is to more evidence of the link between Louisiana and the Caribbean. This time the voodoo via Perez. Oh yeah, plenty of Perez in tonight's links to get you ready for the mambo versions of our regular cast of musicians later. Another mislabeling possibility as this sounds like Jimmy Reed
Big Joe Turner
"TV Mama"
Joe is looking for that wide screen TV.
TV Slim
"TV Man"
TV Slim has the wildest imagination for topical songs. Huh! My favorite of his is: Don't Reach Across My Plate.
Jesse Rogers
"Hadacol Boogie"
The first step of my program for breaking your TV addiction is to stomp on your TV remote. The second it to return to drinking Hadacol - the drink that made old-time radio listenable
Ray Condo
"Hadicillin Boogin"
Okay so I'm feeling a bit left out. Like I'm the only guy who didn't do a Michael Jackson radio-necrophilia "tribute." Instead, I bring you this rare historical artifact - a link to an event you always suspected occurred.
Eddie Smalling's Rolling Aces
"Jeanie"
A set of music about Jeannie and Jenny so that I can practice my pyrotechnic announcing skills.
Mickey Hawks
"Screaming Mimi Jeanne"
The Last Great Rockabilly Saturday
Eddie Cochran
"Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie"
Little Richard
"Jenny Jenny"
The Specialty Sessions
Jean Mikal and the Hepcats
"Betty Jean Rock"
From Jeannie to Julie who's lost in a cave:
Gary Spider Webb
"The Cave (Part I)"
Julie! Julie! Jimmy! Jimmy! Help me! Where are you? I'm over her. Julie! Julie! Jimmy! Jimmy! These pointless lyrics end with Julie screaming because a bat is near her. A cliff hanger for "The Cave (Part II) coming up after this set of music about cavemen. Why do I like this goofy song so much?
Tommy Seele
"Rock With the Caveman"
Maybe Julie is with this caveman?
Majestics
"Cave Man Rock"
Or this caveman?
Jimmy Castor Bunch
"Troglodyte"
This classic song about the courtship of a caveman remains the only song that out-Funkadeliced the P-Funk crowd. Try this link for one of my favorite music videos of all time, set to this song.
Gary Spider Webb
"The Cave (Part II)"
The Ultimate Horror LP
As Phil Proctor and his cohorts once declared, "A cave is just a hole on it's side."
Scooter Gil and the Accents
"Phantom Wheels"
Another minimalist narrative song that sound so much like Gary Webb's Cave. Why do these narrative songs grab the brain stem when their lyrics are so simplistic and goofy?
Blue Lu Barker
"At The Animal Ball"
1946-49
Sounding like the root of the Audubon Zoo classic but without the "ax."
Dale Thomas
"Crocodile Hop"
Ultra Rare Rockabilly V5
Okay so we're at the zoo but the sound effects on all these animal songs begins with either an elephant trumpeting or monkeys screaming. Budget Zoo present the no-bio-diversity zoo of the future.
Saxons
"Camel Walk"
You know what song comes next.
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet
"Baby Elephant Walk"
Music For Pets
Concepts
"Jungle"
Peggy Scott Adams
"Bill"
Bill
Time for the Southern Decadence set beginning with the song that could have inspired the movie Brokeback Mountain.
Bob Wills
"Cowboy Stomp"
Swingbillies V2
Music for those poor confused cowboys who wandered into Southern Decadence.
Patsy Montana
"I Want to be a Cowboy Sweetheart"
Yodel!
A tremendous album of music .
Honey Bears
"One Bad Stud"
Fifties Collection
I can hear and see Jon Voight as the Midnight Cowboy mixing with the crowd outside. Ratso Rizzo wouldn't fit in.
Jerry McCain and the Blues Rockers
"Calling All Cows"
Where's yer' herd?
Lee Dorsey
"Holy Cow"
The Definitive Collection
More cows for the cowboys
TV Slim
"Gravy Around Your Plate"
The ultimate destination for the herd. TV Slim's greatest song? "Don't Reach Across My Plate."
Smiley Lewis
"Playgirl"
Smiley Lewis Vol 1
Oh it's a ridiculous transition. From bovine doggies to canine dogs? Or is it the title to this song that makes the bridge between Southern Decadence and these answer songs to "Hound Dog?" Oh, did you know that Ray Naquin is the head of Southern Decadence? And all this time I thought he was too busy being our mayor.
Rufus Thomas
"Bear Cat"
Sun Records Collection V1
Rufus could do animal sounds better than Mel Blanc
Genuine Diamelles
"Underdog"
Goobers
The lyrics to this song were always perfect but the music enjoyment hasn't faded after all these post-childhood decades.
Del Counts
"Bird Dog"
Mel Smith and the Nite Riders
"Pretty Plaid Skirt"
Night Owls
"Stompin'"
Original Starfires
"Fender Bender"
The link is sample of what's to come.
Hully Gully Boys
"Yabba!"
Oh this started the mambo jag. This is half a great song. The beginning and end have a simple riff with a vocal of the magic word, "HUH" but middle is ruined by a trite organ passage. The great Rex Doane of WFMU use the best parts of this song as his music bed for Fool's Paradise and it gives such a beautiful texture to his show. HUH!
Sonny James
"Uh HUH mm"
1957
HHHHHUUUUUUHHHH!
Luke McDaniel
"HUH Baby"
Essential Sun Rockabilly
This Dean Martin version doesn't fit into tonight's music but we couldn't exclude it in the links. Okay and here is Rosemary Clooney's version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzUfmh3G9AE
Treniers
"Who Put the "Ungh" in Mambo"
Chuck Higgins
"Dy-Ohh Mambo"
Crows
"Mambo Shevitz (Man Oh Man)"
Hank Snow
"That Crazy Mambo Thing"
Of the many versions of this song, Hank nails it best.
Coasters
"Loop De Loop Mambo"
Orchestra Marimba Chiapas
"Rico Mambo"
Marimba, Mambo Y Cha-Cha-Cha
Take any song, add tens of maribas and you have an instant classic. I'm using this for a music bed but try out this link and you'll see second best music video of all time.
Hawkettes
"Mardi Gras Mambo"
Cosimo Matassa Story
Proper
Funny thing about the New Orleans treatments of the mambo, only one HUH is in these four songs. It is in the first four bars of Mardi Gras Mambo then nothing....
Guitar Gable
"Congo Mambo"
Link to Celia Cruz not because of it's fit but because it is a very young Celia and she's dancing throughout the song. Years ago I'm at Carter Barron Ampitheater in Washington, D.C. with my first date after moving there. I'm lonely and want the company but as soon as Celia gets going I rush the stage and start dancing without that very patient date. I kind of thought I once again put music to high on the list of priorities but 30 minutes later she's dancing behind me and I'm so happy that I don't screw up the date... yet.
Classie Ballou
"The Crazy Mambo"
Hard to believe we completely pissed off the island of Cuba just so we could have a mobster-inspired vacation spot. But then again, who could resist the mambo?
Eddie Bo or Huey Piano Smith
"We Like Mambo"
So after Huey gets screwed by having his hit credited to Eddie Bo, then Eddie starts getting all these requests to play We Like Mambo. What's a musician to do? Turn down a proven hit? Don't bet on the winning horse after the race? Bo learn the song and starts performing it. Bo didn't do anything malicious. He was completely free of our buccaneer heritage. It just evolved from audience requests. However, as a post-Katrina looter (a.k.a. underwater archeological ethnomusicologist) I can't alway document the music's providence. I have no idea if this version is Eddie's or Huey's. I do know it is mine based on the legal precedent of "finders keepers" (Lafette v. Espana, 1799, cite unknown - common law from everyone's elementary school years)
Big Maybelle
"New Kind of Mambo"
Okay so we all like the old mambo clips and music but this works. Especially as Big Maybelle is singing about the new kind of mambo>
Lenny McDaniel
"Brand New Mambo"
The Blues Side
Singing the same sentiments as Big Maybelle
Jim Brown and the Four Belles
"Mambo Baby"
Rock and Roll Ringers
Los Teen Tops
"Buen Rock Esta Noche"
Good Rockin Tonight
Julian Herrera and the Tigers
"True Fine Mama"
I can't stop with these mambo links.
Little Vic
"Papa Lou"
Okay this mambo and latin set has got to come to an end and since the cool-out FM DJ tradition is to get weirder as the night goes on, the next set is music about cleaning yourself.
Jeff Chaz
"I've Got to Be Clean"
Cookin' in Old Grease
Yeah I know there are more than one meanings listed for "clean" but this is radio not text so meanings are as fluid as your imagination. And audio is the petri dish for imagination.
Marvin Rainwater
"Hot and Cold"
Every time someone flushes or turns on the hose, my shower goes from hot to cold to hot and cold...
Mr. Clean
"Mr. Clean"
John Mooney
"Keep it Clean"
Dealing With The Devil
Link is to a dealing with the devil concept come to life. This is actually my family video featuring my long lost cousin and my aunt who always dreamed of making it big in show business.
Walter Cole
"Mama Keep Your Yes Ma'am Clean"
Good For What Ails You: Music of the Medicine Shows
Link is to dancing do's and don't. Complete with hygene hints and how to make sure your baubles don't get caught on his (it certainly does look like his baubles).
American-Standard
"My Bathroom"
The Bathrooms Are Coming
Okay, singing in the bathroom is cute. This song sung about the bathroom is creepy. But who was the marketing genius at American-Standard who staked their career on an entire lp of songs about bathrooms. And this is no Alvin and the Chipmunks cheap novelty production. This has big arrangements and instrumentation and singers who are in key. Like Julie Andrews and the Sound of Music, but the idea is completely goofy. Even creepy. Oh I gotta clear out of here and let Sam rejuvenate the abused electromagnetic spectrum centered around 90.7 MHz.
Barney Kessel
"Honey Rock"
Link is to a documentary about dancing the mambo and salsa a the Palladium in NYC.
