Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa
October, 2005 -
Six weeks after Katrina and only hours before the first second-line parade to revisit the Quarter.... Leroy Jones and Katja Toivola miraculously put together a wonderful second-line band. How do they find both the proper instrumentation and musicians in a devastated city that so many outsiders were calling "dysfunctional?" They did what our detractors couldn't do; made something happen.
Mardi Gras 2009 -
Leroy is again leading the Society of Saint Anne to the Mississippi River where we throw our deceased's ashes into the river. He has many of those same musicians that he gathered after Katrina. Again, our detractors equate Bourbon Street with Mardi Gras but now we know the outsider's claims are merely projections of themselves. A failed inkblot test.
For those taking the time to understand the unique culture of New Orleans - our culture is our people. People like Leroy and Katja and all our deceased from Katrina and last year.
That was my Mardi Gras.Jamie Dell'Apa
Every Saturday night from Midnight to 3am (the drunk drive-time shift) we play music that was created before folks started rigidly classifying music into "rhythm and blues, blues, blues shouters, rock, rock-a-billy, etc. Back when the musician's muse was undiminished by recording formulas and audience expectations. Plenty of scratchy low fi records here.
Archived and streaming versions of my shows will return soon. I've just got to shout the proper profanities at a few web sites.
Box Score from tonight's show:
Over 80 songs and interstitials
< 2 minutes per selection average
Sets about:
1. Knocking on the front door
2. Running out of money at the bar's last call
3. Little kid lead singers
4. The name "Marie"
5. Cows and cows in Dallas
6. Moving north to Oklahoma and Oklahoma prisons
7. Primal guitar instrumentals (rock's stereotypical screaming guitars)
and as always woven around New Orleans' unique music.
