Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa
It is Mardi Gras in New Orleans where we embrace irrationality, smooch with irreverence, get to second base with childishness, and make-it-all-the-way with intoxication. The monkey-shines holiday.
Coincidentally, this week was Charles Darwin's 200th birthday and to celebrate, people sent me internet links to vidiot behavior. I've included a few links of my brethren from the shallow end of the XY chromosomes gene pool along with plenty of songs about that kernel of monkey reasoning that still drives humans.
In a few hours, the great Barkus parade will start and we'll get you in the mood with a set of dog music in honor of Barkus Royalty - King Scrappy:
The news that two satellites crashed into each other this week set off a set of songs about Sputnick. Why is music about outer space so good? Even songs about elevators are better than purely terrestrial songs.
The big experiment tonight; can we listen to the entire Planet of the Apes movie via sound clips between songs in the monkey set? And for those streaming the archived show, we'll also include video links of species-ending behavior during the same set. Kind of like three-shows-in-one oil. (We'll take two pledges instead of one at our post Mardi Gras fund drive.) Tell me what you think (or else I'll keep trying this tortured radio).
As always, thanks to the staff and volunteers at WWOZ for allowing a radio station to be remarkable and The Hound and WFMU for the inspiration and Down Low Ds.
Box stats from the show:
90 Songs and interstitials averaging two minutes per cut
10 Dog songs
17 Satellite songs including
07 Sputnick songs
14 Monkey songs
01 Entire movie condensed down to 45 seconds (Planet That Went Ape)
04 Rattlesnake songs
05 Elevator songs
02 Computer reboots during the show - the Mac was irritated by:
01 Floor and wall shaking party that was so loud I had to wear headphones through air monitors. Plenty of music bed under the announcer breaks.
So, don't you think Chris Paul's sideburns are shaped exactly like Spock's?
