Program: Jazz from the Market with Jelly Roll Justice
Two remarkable musicians were interviewed today: New Orleans trumpeter Leroy Jones and Benin guitarist Lionel Loueke. What a treat to talk with these brilliant and thoughtful artists about their music (both have new albums just released) and their thoughts on contemporary jazz. Received several phone calls from listeners taken by Loueke's infusion of several African cultural/musical influences in his tunes. Then after Leroy shared his thoughts with us, calls came from people taken by the concept of a composer seeing his music in colors. Wonderful for me to listen to both of these insightful and multi-talented artists.
Playlist Tracks
Thelonious Monk "Nice Work If You Can Get It" Monk's Classic Recordings 1971 The theme during the first hour was "Nice N' Easy". No better way than to start with the Maestro's classic. |
Billie Holiday "It's Easy to Remember" Lady In Satin 1997 Originally a 1958 rendition of this Rodgers and Hart beauty by the Lady. |
Gust Spenos Quartet with Wycliffe Gordon "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" Swing Theory 2007 This is one of the finest albums of 2007 and Wycliffe Gordon is stupendous. |
Easy Living "Paul Desmond" Feeling Blue 1966 Famous as Dave Brubeck's sax man on "Take Five" album, Desmond shines on his own as well. |
Jackie McLean "Nicely" Feeling Blue 1962 McLean is right on with this Sonny Clark tune, moving between tempos and moods "nicely". |
Ray Bryant "Easy to Love" In the Back Room 2008 Great music. It is that simple and while easy to listen to, it still challenges. |
Benny Green "Nice Pants" The Place To Be 1994 Upbeat and fanciful, Benny Green plays his own song with gusto and sophistication. |
Steve Turre "Easy Now" Keep Searchin' 2006 Steve Turre swings. He knows the meaning of a groove, and in this tune that he wrote, he never strays from its theme. Creative yet disciplined. |
Frank Sinatra "Nice N' Easy" Nice N' Easy 958 This is Sinatra's and no one can match what the theme of this pre-Valentine hour: Nice N' Easy. |
Lionel Loueke "Karibu" Karibu 2009 This and Gilfema + 2 are Lionel's two latest albums. The virtuosity of his trio is astonishing. |
Lionel Loueke "Benny's Tune" Karibu 2009 Karibu means "welcome" in Kenya and is what Loueke is all about: bringing you into his music was warmth and graciousness. |
Roy Hargrove "Easy To Remember" Approaching Standards 1994 I picked this tune because the trumpet is a wonderful counter point to Lionel's guitar. |
Annie Lennox "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" Red Hot + Blue: Tribute to Cole Porter 1990 One of the best albums I have heard, and Lennox simply nails this Cole Porter masterpiece. |
Leroy Jones "Katrina" Sweeter Than A Summer's Breeze 2009 This is Leroy's composition that he wrote while a "refugee" from the storm. Leroy's tune is melancholy and inspirational, not depressing. |
Leroy Jones "My Funny Valentine" Sweeter Than A Summer's Breeze 2009 A special treat for Valentine's Day. Notice the excellent use of strings on this classic that is still refreshing in Leroy's hands. |
Leroy Jones "Sweeter Than A Summer's Breeze" Sweeter Than A Summer's Breeze 2009 Written 7 years ago, this is a new rendition of one of Leroy's best compositions. He really moves us through the air, sweetly. |
Allen Toussaint "Meter Head" Jazzity Project Charisma 2005 This came out before the Storm and I wish that Mr. Toussaint would devote more time to his jazz compositions because I love this album and want more. |
Branford Marsalis "Lament" Renaissance 1987 This J.J. Johnson song reaches through our minds the way Bradford arranges and plays it. |
Irvin Mayfield "The Obsession" How Passion Falls 2001 Enveloping and possessive, that it is the only way I can describe this Mayfield composition and rendition. |
Stardust "Doc Cheatham and Nicholas Payton" Doc Cheatham and Nicholas Payton 1997 Two of New Orleans' finest trumpet players share and trust through this great Hoagy Carmichael tune. |
Dr. John "Hit the Road to Dreamland" Mercernary 2006 Dr. John presents no "confusement" --- he just plays this song to perfection in his own style. |
Ellis Marsalis Trio "The Very Thought of You" On the First Occasion 1998 Mr. Marsalis allows us to join him on his magic carpet. Don't hold on; just trust him and go with music --- and transcend. |
John Boutte "Let Them Talk" WWOZ volume 13 2000 John Boutte plays this song of liberation to the nth degree. Never say James Booker play it, but if better than Boutte, I am in awe. |
Juanita Brooks "Didn't We" More Jazz 2009 A New Orleans treasure, Ms. Brooks voice and soul brings this jazz classic to life. That's Detroit Brooks on guitar. What a fabulous album!! |
Marcus Roberts "Memories of You" Wynton Marsalis: Standard Time vol. 1 1986 Wynton steps aside and lets the great pianist Robert play a fabulous solo of this jazz classic. |
John Coltrane And Johnny Hartman "Lush Life" The Very Best of John Coltrane 1963 Nobody, but nobody, can touch this Billy Strayhorn masterpiece after this recording. Amazing, Strayhorn wrote it at 16 but did not play it publicly until years later in Carnegie Hall with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. |
