Krewe du Vieux Parade

(Aether Version)

Next Saturday night the Krewe du Vieux parade will roll through the Marigny and Quarter to kick off the cultural start of Mardi Gras.  This is one wacky parade so they were more than willing to join my attempt to create an audio preview of the parade on tonight's show.   Keith Twitchell of Krewe du Vieux and I will be in Krewe du Vieux costumes as we play music representing each of the sub-krewes themes.

Gawd, Vegas is giving Keith and I a 50/50 chance of being audio disasters.  Here goes....

Some of the material in the audio from this show and video links below may not be suitable for minors.  The 2009 parade will also feature adult themes and visuals.  "Adult" means the kind of gross humor that 8th-grade boys find hilarious.

Speaking of videos, tonight's links definitely travel a separate but parallel path to the broadcast audio.  Video from Krewe du Vieux to Fernwood Tonight and ending up in the strangest place of all; Hasil-land.

Thanks to Keith Twitchell and all the great folks at Krewe du Vieux, especially Plaine Kern and Vice Lee who turn out greater and greater parades every year.

To WWOZ's staff and volunteers and to WFMU and The Hound.

"You've Got To Pay the Chinaman"
Oh Yeah, Baby
A rare "parade's-eye-view" of the KdV from Krewe of C.R.U.D.E. (These guys are so organized they even have a potty on their float. Okay so it is a bucket covered by a toilet seat - but it has a cup holder.)
5 Discs
"My Chinese Girl"
Good video (horrible sound) from the pre-K 2005 parade; What Would Krewe Du Vieux Do?" This theme garnered us a bigger audience share of the more out-spoken evangelical population who attended our 2006 parade with signs a-twirling. Unfortunately for them, they didn't realize we change our theme every year and they didn't understand our 2006 theme of "Cest Levee" so their presence didn't really make any sense to them or anyone else. They did get some cool throws though.
Snooks Eaglin
"Ling Ting Tong"
Soul's Edge
The preceding set of music was for the Krewe of Underwear who are satirizing the xenophobes who make Chinese funding of US debt. They're just buying treasury bills, not the actual treasury.
Larry and Dixie Davis
"Shark Bait"
For Krewe of CRAPS, the sharks on the bankrupt seas. Craps costumes will be sharks, their float is a gold plated boat, and their specialty throw are second-line hankies. I'll be the shark that looks like he should be at his midnight gig at WWOZ.
Sherman "Blues" Johnson
"Hot Fish"

... With Glasses the Very Best of John Fred
Video medley of John performing my favorite songs, Shirley, Agnes English, and Judy in Disguise. "Garbage Man Blues"
Bo Diddley
"Two Flies"
Bo Diddley video
Legendary Stardust Cowboy
"Standing In A Trash Can"
Another performer from the upcoming Ponderosa Stomp who surprisingly nails the garbage theme for Krewe du Vieux too. His visuals make the performance.

"Cave Man Rock"
Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo
"Cave Man Rock"
100 Novelty 45's
From the write up on youtube: The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo on the Gong Show. This was seen originally in 1976. This had been sitting on my shelf for years. I figured all old time Boingo fans may enjoy this. I still have about 25 stubs from all the Boingo concerts I saw, and never missed the annual Halloween show. It appears the guy with the rocket is Danny's brother Richard, and Danny is playing the Trombone.

Finally a video that exactly matches the playlist. Ah but matching is so overrated.
Dody Goodman
"Pneumatic Drill"
Dody Goodman Sings?
Dody was one of those actors-singers-broadcast voices that you always ran across but never quite associated the voice and face with a name. Her music continues on in this tradition - good stuff but sub rosa. Link is to Dody on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Oh yeah, remember when Martin Mull first played Barth Gimble on Mary Hartman?
Champion Jack Dupree
"Junker's Blues"
Flashbacks - High and Low
Baron Lee and the Blue Rhythm Band
"Reefer Man"
Flashbacks - High and Low
Oh cheez, we're on a Fernwood Tonight riff. Yep, it ties into the music in a Beavis and Butthead way.
Bea Foot
"Weed"
The Sky Is High And So Am I
Barth Gimble with Gary Coleman
LaVern Baker
"Voodoo Voodoo"
Loud, Fast, and Out of Control
Fernwood Tonight with Virgil Simms (a.k.a. Jim Varney)
JB Lenior
"Voodoo Boogie"
Barth with Tony Rolletti. So many people do the Rolletti character but I don't think anyone has substantially improved upon Bill Kirchenbauer's version.
Jay McShann
"Voodoo Woman Blues"
Mercury R&B Story 45-55
Mercury
Fred Willard as Jerry Hubbard, Martin Mull as Barth Gimble and Frank DeVol as Happy Kime. These guys all had plenty of talent and the combination worked (especially at the time, three decades ago). Kind of like public radio - introducing the new talent in a format that places artistic presentation over moneyed production. So who else hit the Barth Gimble show?
The Rays
"Tippity Top"
The Chess Story
With Tom Waits on his return to the show. Flip through the youtube site to find the second and third parts of this show with Waits. Okay, basta on the Fernwood Tonight jag.
Sugar Boy and His Cane Cutters
"Watch Her Whip Her"
Andre Williams
"Put a Chain On It"
A video for the Boudin Man. Andre Williams with Morning 40 Federation.

More Joe Liggins on video. This time doing Big Joe's Boogie.
Bob Willis
"Big Ball's In Cowtown"

A hidden camera captures the action at Broad and Tulane during the Eddie Jordan years.
Conway Twitty
"I Vibrate (From My Head To My Feet)"
Conway gets the Robin Leach treatment.
Hasil Adkins
"Shake That Thing"
Dee Jay Jamboree - Chicken Walk
Part one of a documentary on Hasil. The other parts are also available at this link. Put aside some time, this is a good documentary.
Chan Romero
"The Hippie Hippie Shake"
Loud Fast and Out of Control
Kind of a sad setting for this Chan performance. Chan should be at the Ponderosa Stomp.
Jack Dupree
"Shake Baby Shake"
Jack Dupree in a cooking performance from the Montreux Jazz Festival with Lee Allen. Champion Jack Dupree - vocal, piano; Lee Allen - tenor sax; Dave Douglas - guitar; Carton McWilliams - bass; Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie - drum
Conway Twitty
"Shake It Up"
Link is to Part Two of the Hasil Adkins documentary. Move aside Bobby Lounge - you're just too bland.
Hasil Adkins
"The Hunch"
Third part of Hasil's documentary. This is too good to chance you not finding it.
Hasil Adkins
"Hubcap Hunch"
A typically subtle performance by Hasil.
