Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa

We're Sinking!

We start tonight's show on a high ground with interviews of (1) Washboard Chaz talking about his time playing with the late great Judy Rodrick and (2) tenth-generation New Orleanian, pianist Armand St. Martin talking about us New Orleanians' relationship with water (and how this relationship is reflected in his music).  As soon as these impressive adults leave the studio I sink to my swamp level with sets of music about:

1.  Drinking

2.  Driving (an intended sequitor)

3.  Mambo

4.  Cats songs with human choras' of "meow"

5.  Beans and the natural follow-up

6.  Stomach aches and vomiting and finally a complete non-sequitor

7.  Girl watching and wolf calls.

Another reminder to me that without adult supervision, I sink very low very fast.

In the next years I'm sure we'll be seeing them riding down to the French Quarter on overly noisy motorcycle with tramp stamp tattoos. Go to the audio archive of this show for Chaz' touching memories about Judy and remember Chaz has played with such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, and John Hammond and he puts Judy at the top of his list - but listen to him say it (at about 20 minutes into the show). With the Forebears: Don DeBacker guitar Washboard Chaz leary percussion Tim Martin bass Dexter Payne reeds plus: Dr. John piano Bernard Grant vocal Forrest Means trumpet Chris Lege trombone Fly McLard on tenor and baritone sax Eugene Smith drums and some very impressive liner notes by Dick Waterman.

River Stay Away From My Door
Green Pastures

A set of music about New Orleanian's relationship with our watery surroundings. The lack of federal response to the 1927 Mississippi River flood was similar to Katrina and the nation reacted similar to post-Katrina. Then as now, there were particularly moving songs written and performed. Paul Robeson provides some great examples of this shared time.

One generation past the 1927 flood, Percy's lyrics; talking about his troubles to the river then having the river speak back to him, is the epitome of the New Orleanian's relationship with the water. Similarly, today so many of us walk on the levees when the water is high, not only enjoy the vista, but to also feel with our feet our only assurance of safety. And have you ever seen the crowds who visit the Bonne Carre Spillway when it is opened? The Governor usually makes an appearance too - all again emphasizing the strength and subtlety of that relationship we all have with the water.

Tenth generation New Orleanian, Armand St. Martin's two songs advances this linage of songs referring to our relationship with the water. I hesitate to paraphrase Armand's discussion of his songs portrayal of this relationship because his in-studio presentation captured it so well. If you haven't done it yet, follow the web link to the archived audio to hear Armand's presentation. (And thanks to Patty for setting up this segment of the show.)

This song also appears on the Alligator Ball cd that predates Katrina but deals with the same metaphoric topic of an approaching hurricane and that narrow ribbon of survival off our island. A metaphor that we're always conscious of as the idea of being trapped while the water rises is a nightmare. The web link is to my friend Terry's recitation of that exact nightmare.

A set of music about, well, staring at girls and acting badly.

A song about cat calls. Hmmm, cat calls might lead to the next set of music - humans mimicking real cat calls - meows.
Troy Shondell
Girl After Girl

More watching of the girls but I like the big bass sound in this song.

I'm in a Bo Diddley phase lately. I'm not sure what happened with his non-hits but the quality of these songs are really high.

Okay I broke down and played one Christmas song to meet a request but this song didn't have a single musical instrument, only tool noises. Woody (this can't be a real name) plays Jingle Bells on a table saw, hand saw, spray paint can, ratchet wrench, drill, etc. Now that is public radio!

Tough billing for the backup band. I can't imagine them spending a great deal of quality time together off stage.
