This is another very recent cd, and it's another fave of the year for me. The band is from New York, not New Orleans. I've included a link to their myspace page, in case you want to check them out further.
Shamarr Allen
"When You're Smiling"
Meet Me on Frenchmen Street

This is the most outstanding debut album from a New Orleans artist I've heard in a long time. I believe it will become iconic.

Such a complete sampling of New Orleans music, and a comprehensive booklet about the music and its context is contained in this 4-cd boxed set. I received mine as a Christmas present in 2005. Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans? This holiday gift helped me through those tough times.

The history of Gospel Music in New Orleans is incomplete without mention of the late, great Raymond Myles: the consumate artist, and life-saving mentor to so many.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band, featuring Tuba Fats on vocals and tuba

Often used as a funeral song, this is an uplifing, upbeat version - an expression of joy. If you are unfamiliar with the late Anthony Lacen, the link about him is available here.
Ytres Soloens Jass-Ensemble, featuring Tricia Boutte
"Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus"

One amazing thing about this track is the intricate and precise backing vocals. There is so much that goes into the attraction of this recording. Take the percussion for another instance... This cd was on many "Best of 2007" lists last year.
Bob French
"Bourbon Street Parade"
Marsalis Music Honors Bob French
Marsalis Music

With Branford marsalis and harry Connick, Jr. returning to play with the man who they played with as youngsters, this cd is a circle completed beautifully. The link gives a good summary of both Bob French's career and a description of this particular cd.

Lisa Lynn
"Some of These Days"
I'm No Angel
New Orleans Angel Records

Lisa Lynn is an authentic "red hot mama". She is a delightful showman, and this cd comes closest to capturing her "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" coquetery yet.

Shannon Powell always gives a good-time show. He plays at the beloved local musicians' hangout Donna's Bar & Grill whenever he's in town.
