The Day The Earth Stood Still!

Better than Casablanca, Gone With The Wind, 2001, and even Napoleon Dynamite -  the original, 1950s movie; The Day The Earth Stood Still is a perfect movie.  A Nadia Comenichi, 10-out-of-10, a small city's worth of thumbs ups, Obama-like movie.

Most people have seen 1,000s of movies.  I've seen only one movie thousands of times.  Why seen another movie and be disappointed?  Unlike the original version of, The Day The Earth Stood Still, this weekends' release-of-a-movie-under-the-same-title isn't a documentary.  A travesty!  I propaganda message contrary to the reality of the original movie.  And there will be consequences.  YES, a remake of The Day The Earth Stood may be the end of Western Civilization, or even Earth.

Oh you think this danger is radio hyperbole?  With this remake, we are telling our alien friends that we are Karl Roving the wisdom they left for us.  This combined with Lou Dobbs' xenophopic anti-alien rants are intergalactic fighting words.  "Put up your tentacles!"  The barroom talk from Planet X to the Crab dip Nebula is: "Time to re-visit Earth and remind the puny earthlings that Gort is not a latte-drinking, Volvo driving, NPR listening wussy."

DAMN YOU LOU DOBBS!

So tonight, WWOZ broadcasts a humility offering to our intergalactic alien friends (and potential masters).  40 songs and audio clips about flying saucers, alien robots, and examples of alien-earthling friendships.

Quite a parade of audio Mardi Gras floats tonight:

Float One - Lou Dobbs versus Gort

Float Two - Underwater reverb bass songs

Float Three - Hot Rod Driving Instructions for my Drunk Driving Audience

Float Four -  Stuttering and Sputtering Lyrics

King's Float - Earl Palmer

And lastly, a spoken word tribute to Gilles Heron, The Black Arrow who passed away last week.  In the 1950s, Gilles was the Jackie Robinson of Scottish soccer but you may know him as the father to musician Gil Scott Heron. The last web link is to an Boston Globe article by Frank Dell'Apa.

A couple of the Gulf Coast's favorites to start the show; Barbara Lynn and Johnny Rivers. I can never get enough of these two. By starting the show with them, I can quit obsessing about how to slip them into a segments about flying saucers, reverb bass, stuttering, and Earl Palmer. Barbara's bio and music sample at Ponderosa Stomp's web site.

Audio clips between this series of songs are dialogue from the original; The Day The Earth Stood Still. Remember these words, they may save your life: "Klaatu Barada Nicto." Link is to the Italian language version of the final speech of the movie. Of course, this movie was so important that it has been translated into every language. Tonight's sign off salute will be; "Gort, Merinque."

Audio clip is to the movie Easy Rider. So why did Jack Nicholson get any work after this methane-gas-in-an-elevator movie? Quit hanging off our cemetery statutes with your crappy southern accent and if you want to see a real basketball player check out Chris Paul instead of Kobe ("No, no means Go Go ") Bryant.
Bo Diddley
Moon Baby
Rare and Well Done

Bo on "Hollywood a Go Go" with some goofy introduction about the origination of Bo's name. On its face, this explanation doesn't make sense but the dancing is great and the woman on bass (Is that "The Duchess?") has the best hair ever filmed. Bo's name always struck me as a transposition of a Diddley Bow, a one string home-made guitar with a big reverb sound something like Bo's guitar. Hey, if anyone can pick out guitarist Bobby Parker on any of these clips, please send me an e-mail with the citation. jdellapa@yahoo.com

And this entry is for the documentary, The Day The Earth Stood Still. Note the last sentence of the entry states Colin Powell and Lou Cannon believed this movie inspired Ronald Reagan to discuss uniting with Mikhail Gorbachev in case of alien invastion. Reagan later gave a speech to Americans citing the proper foreign policy response to an alien invasion. (The audio clip from this speech will be played a few songs from now.) Cheez, with conservatives this xenophobic it is no wonder they (not we) are sadistically imprisoning and torturing foreigners and conducting unnecessary wars. Nixon, Reagan, and Bush 43 - we have had some really embarrassing presidents.

I thought this was a stage name and the recording a funny joke but this guy is serious(ly goofy). Read this link to his bio and remember with a "seeker born every minute" there is a very large population of idiots running around. That is a big constituency if you want to be an officer of an organization. Kind of clears up that question of a month ago; "How could anyone consider the Disaster from Alasker as credible?"

From Western Michigan University - a song we all have heard and loved. I bet you wished it would replace all that pablum music played on today's commercial radio stations.
Shirley Ellis
The Clapping Song

Shirley performing the Clapping Song with over-amped dancers acting out the song's lyrics. The lyrics are sung in a nursery rhyme style kind of like New Orleans' Dixie Cups' version of Iko Iko.

Harmonica Frank Floyd deserves extended playing and if I can wrangle more of his music it will be very funny radio. From a write up for Adelphi Records at www.adelphirecords.com: Wine goes in, the truth comes out. -Harmonica Frank Floyd The late Frank Floyd recorded his first Chess single of old-time country blues for Sam Phillips in 1951, and with "Swamp Root" had some minor success with Sun Records. As an older performer, and one whose songs harked back to both black minstrelsy and white hillbilly music of the 1920s, Floyd saw his records mistaken for "race music" as Elvis and rock'n'roll took over. Years later, Floyd re-emerged from farm life to play folk heritage festivals, accompanying himself on harmonica and guitar, and still sounding like he stepped right out of the 1920s -- foot tapping, single-note strumming, harmonica wailing -- Floyd learned how to please a crowd with jokes and to play harmonica without a rack, the instrument protruding cigar-style from his mouth. Floyd died in 1984,

The Astronauts surf sound has some of the biggest of the big reverb. Reportedly they were the inspiration for Ennio Morriconi's spagetti westerns. Check out Ennio's work with Chet Baker and his acceptance speech in Italian at the Grammy Awards a couple years ago.
Roseann Cash
Queen of Hearts

A set of music featuring a big wet reverb bass line from Roseann Cash to Shadowy Men From a Shadowy Planet. Roseann is such a great musician and for better or worse, she is often too closely associated with her father. This woman stand on her own merit.

Earl Palmer; Worlds Greatest Rock and Roll Drummer

This cd of New Orleans drummer, Earl Palmer, has re-mixed the sound on these songs to highlight Earl's playing. With this touch, it's easy to hear how Earl's drumming made so many of these songs into hits. Link is to Smokey Johnson talking about Earl Palmer.

Gil Scott Heron
A tribute to the Black Arrow

A letter to my older brother, a sports writer for the Boston Globe: Dear Mr. Dell'Apa: My name is Tony Green and former member of Gil Scott-Herons Midnight Band. I'm writing to let you know that Gils father, Papa Giles Heron also known as the Black Arrow for the 1951Celtic, died this past Thursday November 27th, 2008 in Detroit, Michigan. Below is the article you wrote about him in February 2007. I and his family would like to express our deepest appreciation for your concern and contribution about his life while he was alive. GOD BLESS YOU MR. DELL'APA. He surely deserved the recognition you gave him. Sincerely, Tony Green http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blackhistory2007/news/story?id=2763306 This is THE Celtic -- Celtic FC, that is.
