Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa

Drunk Drive Time Radio

During these midnight to three am shifts I have telephone conversations with people practicing both their drunk driving and drunk dialing skills.  It is wrong in so many ways but this being New Orleans it inspires tonight's music.

Float One - Hot Rods To Hell

Put away your high brow public radio expectations, tonight's audio Mardi Gras parade begins with a salute to the hot rod.  Songs not about "cars" or" automobiles" but "hot rods."   Think movies like Hot Rods to Hell that scared the crap out this once ten year old kid and check another fan's web site devoted to this movie:

Float Two - Your Trash Ain't Nothin' But Cash

The next audio float is a tribute to St. Bernard's golden boy Sidney Torres - the garbage man.  Torres has performed well on his refuse collection contract but recent revelations that New Orleans refuse (and sewage!) is being dumped in St. Bernard.  Our down-river friends are not happy being at the wrong end of New Orleans' intestine.  Reports are that the FBI is going to investigate and tonight were going to add nothing substantial by providing a set of music about garbage to sooth the savage beast.

Float Three - Uptown, Downtown Back of Town, Gert Town, Pigeon Town,

The election coverage sliced and diced Americans into every demographic imaginable but music has always given uptown a highbrow connotation and downtown a hipster aura..  A short set pitting "uptown" versus "downtown" in an audio 'rasslin' match.

Float Four - Chicago Chicago

There are actually plenty of songs written about Obama but since they're being played too much these days, we'll play songs of Chicago including an absolutely horrible version of Chicago, Chicago done ironically by Abbie Hoffman.

The Jazz Singers

Abbie Hoffman's singing is coming up at the next song. To connect Abbie to New Orleans, here is a clip of Abbie defending WWOZ dj, John Sinclair. He gets a mixed response including an El Kabong style guitar whack to the head by Peter Townshed of The Who.
Abbie Hoffman
Chicago, Chicago
Wake Up America

Perhaps the last time Chicago's played host to as large a political gathering as last Tuesday night's Obama speech was when demonstrators gathered during the Democratic convention. The Chicago police brutally dispersed the protesters and Abbie Hoffman was arrested as a leader. Both these pivotal events happened in the same spot of beautiful Grant Park but the difference in outcome could not be more stark. In the sixties people advocated for "love" but got brutality. Today people advocate "realism" but get beautiful fairy tales. At least Abbie had a sense of humor to record himself singing Chicago, Chicago. You've got to have a sense of humor to listen to his horrible singing. (Chicago has seen plenty of huge political gatherings and when race is involved they are larger and bloodier. Chicago's 1919 and 1968 race riots were shockingly worse than the Democratic Convention riots.
