Program: Blues in the Night with Jamie Dell'Apa
Cross Border Invasion!
Noooooo. This isn't Lou Dobbs-land. He's making a career on commercial television where lowest common denominator programming is pushed. Public radio is Bob Dobbs-land where we are blissfully detached from populist programming. In fact we deliver that esoterica that fulfills your soul instead of withering the mass on top of your spinal cord. However, we've been invaded. Not by Planet X-ists or roofers but by those great people from Texas who offered us sanctuary as we fled our drowning city just three years ago.
You would think we would reciprocate now that Texans are suffering from Hurricane Ike but we've been our insular selves and pretty quiet. That is until our mayor announced New Orleans would offer Texans the Ray Nagin discount rate on hotel rooms. Unfortunately, Nagin was joking about the "Nagin Rate" so when desperate Texans began asking hotel desk staff about the rate, New Orleans looked worse than ungrateful.
Not much chance a radio show is going to patch things up but we might as well feature songs about Texas, separation from home, and being on the road.
P.S. Hotel owners felt horrible about what happened and many cut their rates for our friends from Texas.
